I decided to switch from SiteGround to WPBuzz. Got a great deal on the switch, and I was not keeping track of all my websites very well.
This website is the first switch. The rollover was 4/18/25. I saved all the MYSQL data from SiteGround, and downloaded all of the files from the original website. I tried to switch to the original WordPress prefix and got a 500 server error. Oops.
After thinking about it for a while I figured out that there would have been plugins active that may not have worked with WPBuzz’s setup. So, I updated the active plugins record in wp-config to 0. Tried the switch to the prefix again, and boom! – site came up.
Current plugins active:
- Article Directory Shortcodes/Pages – My home-grown plugin
- AvantLink Ad Tools for Affiliates – Still using them. Not sure how much longer
- Classic Editor and Classic Widgets – Pretty much hate Gutenburg, but probably need to learn it
- CookieYes | GDPR Cookie Consent – Stay out of legal issues
- Cool Tag Cloud – My favorite tag cloud
- Easy Contact – Eh. OK
- LiteSpeed cache – always heard this is the absolute best caching. Glad WPBuzz supports it
- Missed Scheduled – Just in case
- Social Warfare – Pretty good
- Socrates Toolkit – Because I’m using Socrates theme
- Website Monetization by MageNet – Not sure if they are even in business
- WebSub (FKA. PubSubHubbub) – Better pinging
- WP Sticky Sidebar – Love this. Avoids ugly white areas
- WPBruiser – Security
- XML Sitemap Generator for Google – Need a sitemap
I’m still using Socrates theme. Dan says he’ll keep it supported until he retires, but no new functionality. He recommends Kadence and Generate Press. I’ve looked at Generate before, but not Kadence. Apparently Kadence uses AI.
I loaded Socrates on Miicor’s website to fix the issues we had with the site. Right now it more or less mimics what was there before. However, I’m working on the home page using Socrates’ header sections template to make it look really slick. Also used ChatGPT to write some small summaries. We’ll see how it turns out.
At some point I will load and test some of Kurt Crisler’s software to see if I can get some more affiliate commissions.
Messing around with featured images as well. Hmmmm. Not sure if I should do them all manually, or switch how the theme handles them.
