Life, the Internet, and Everything!

Bells and Whistles

Web hosting can show you the best and the worst of some companies. If you’d like to get the best service possible, then there are going to be things you need to watch for. Here are some of those things, so you know you’re not getting ripped off in any way.

Don’t just give the first web host you come across your business. This is a surefire way to get ripped off if you’re not careful. Make sure it is well known before you do anything else. You wouldn’t just walk in and have someone work on your car if you didn’t know the company that well, and the same should go for a website. If it doesn’t have a web presence that’s very good, then it has no business offering web hosting services to anyone. Check its reputation on review sites and if it is listed at the Better Business Bureau, check there as well.

When you’re looking for web hosting services, it’s important to look for a few of the features that are being offered. You wouldn’t just pay for all the bells and whistles only to find that you’re just using one or two things. The main feature you’re going to have to look for is the tools that allow you to access your web space. This should be the amount of space that you’re allowed to use to store everything on your site file wise. Another thing you should look for is how much bandwidth you are receiving, which is how much you can upload and download to a site.

Be on the lookout for price freezing just in case they say something about it in your contract. A lot of the time, you can get an introductory price, but it won’t be what you’re allowed to pay throughout the duration of your plan. When this happens, all of a sudden when your trial period is over, you start having to pay quite a bit more than you originally were. You also may get stuck paying a price that eventually goes down for everyone else, but you have to keep paying it because you signed something that said you have to. Be sure to carefully read over everything before signing it.

Free web hosting is something you may want to get if you’re just getting started on creating webpages. The only thing about this is that you’re going to have to deal with ads on your page most of the time, and you’re also not going to be able to have your own domain name. This can be a bad thing if you’re trying to run a business page or something that you hope becomes popular. Only use these sites if you want some practice or if you just have a simple page you need put up for a short period of time.

Creating and maintaining a webpage is only possible if you have a good web hosting service. The tips you’ve read should now have you informed as to what can be looked for in a host. Good luck with your site!

What Art Most Important Features To Look For In A Web Hosting Service? I am new at web design, and in the process of trying to find a good web hosting service. I plan on having lots of videos and photos on my sites, and was wondering what kind of features are the most important for me to be looking for when searching for a web host. Are some servers faster than others? If so, which are the fastest? And is it better to go with a windows or linux server? Are there any other important features that I need to look for? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Well, it depends on how much you want to spend.

      1. If you’re willing to pay $20+/monthly for hosting I recommend:

      2. If you want something cheaper I recommend Dreamhost

Their standard price is $119.40/year ($9.95/month if you pay yearly) but they currently have a promotion. You can use the promo code PLUS at sign up page and get the $50 discount + 2 Free domain names. This way you get them for $69.40/year ($5.78/month). You can use their huge Disk Space and host unlimited number of subdomains and domains on a single plan.

      Disk space: 500 GB
      Bandwidth: 5000 GB
      2 Free domain names
      Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year)

Can I Call The Better Business Bureau For This? My g/f has worked at an upscale deli in portland, oregon for like 2 years now and is having a problem. Another employee has been harrassing her about her job and her work, even tho the employee is from a different department and has no authority to do so. My g/f has gone to management several times about the problem, basically ignored. (this person is buddy buddy with management) Every other person there gets along perfectly with my gf, and most are even friends outside work with her. The problem just got worse when the “person” just got promoted to a low management position, where she has the ability to essentially fire my girlfriend. And in a “fire at will state” it could happen for nothing. We can’t afford for her to lose her job, we wouldn’t have a place to live. So my question is: Can i call the better business bureau about this? I know little about the laws in oregon but i’m sure that there is one about a non-hostile working environment. oh by-the-way, My gf has a college degree in culinary arts and the other person left Subway for this job, and is a transvestite, which is probably the reason the place is scared to fire her, as she would most likely claim discrimination.

This has nothing to do with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB is essentially a recourse for people to go to who are consumers when their places of business are not treating them properly. And in actuality, there is nothing the BBB can do except keep the record (and the companies will want to keep a good record else other individuals will check and find the bad record and will not do business with them).

The first step is the internal HR department. If there is no HR department (you said it was a deli), then I would imagine there is probably a government bureau like the department of labor or something like that who would be willing to hear her out.

What Exactly Is A Web Host? If i subscribe to a web host would they ask me to buy a domain name or is it two completely different things?

A Web host is in the business of providing server space, Web services and file maintenance for Web sites controlled by individuals or companies that do not have their own Web servers. Many ISPs, such as America Online, will allow subscribers a small amount of server space to host a personal Web page. Other commercial ISPs will charge the user a fee depending on the complexity of the site being hosted.

The business of providing the storage, connectivity, and services necessary to serve files for a website.

A company that provides web hosting services is called a web host, and their detailed offers of storage, connectivity, and services are called web hosting plans.

There are literally thousands of web hosting services, ranging from individuals to worldwide corporations, and many web hosts offer multiple web hosting plans.

Below are basic checklists with some factors to consider when searching for a web host and a web hosting plan. Your requirements may vary.

      Company – dependability, stability, profitability.
      People – honesty, integrity, professionalism.
Location – local, regional, national, worldwide.
Reliability – uptime measured as a percentage.
Redundancy – multiple connections to the Net.
Availability – can handle peak traffic volumes.
Scalability – prepared to accomodate growth.
Hardware – fast servers with quality components.
Monitoring – automatic checking of the network.
Backups – good frequency and easy recovery.
Technical Support – experienced and helpful.
Support Hours – real 24/7 vs. promised 24/7.
Response Time – average in minutes or hours.
Support Methods – free/toll phone, email, IM.
Policies – accepts or rejects offensive sites.
Fine Print – does it contradict the big print

What Are The Best Free Web Hosting Services Online? What are the best free web hosting services online and are there any sites that will register a domain name completely for free and let you make it up however you want? EX. www.(yourpreferedname).com

You will not find free domain like unless you exchange some service with domain e.g. posting at forums etc…

If you are serious about websites either for personal or your business, don’t go to free web hosting as they are usually not reliable and you may end up losing all your hard work. Free web hosts usually put advertisements on your websites and it could be annoying.

If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account.

I would like to suggest following webhosting , they are excellent.

They offer hosting of “unlimited domains” and you will get massive webspace of 200000 MB (200 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer “a free Domain Name” and installing service called “Fantastico”. By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer “Free Website Builder” as well.
Visit the site to check details.

Following site is quite good to register domains as price is reasonable with free privacy. Some charge about $5/ year just for free privacy.

What Is The Difference Between A Business Being On The Chamber Of Commerce And Better Business Bureau? I am looking to invest in a company called “Triple -AAA” I cannot find them in the BBB but they claim to be in the Chamber of Commerce.

    View Comment
    1. Reply

The Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization made up of local businesses…basically anyone with a business can join. The object of the CoC is to look out for the better interests of the business community and provide networking and educational opportunities to local businesses. The BBB is an independent organization that seeks to ensure that consumers have a voice when transactions go bad. The BBB attempts to reach a satisfactory conclusion to disagreements between the company and the consumer and provides a reporting service for consumers to allow them to determine which are the better companies in an area to do business with (based upon consumer complaints).

      I use HostGator –
I’ve been with them a long time now, hosting about 20 different websites with no downtime yet. Their support is the best I’ve had from shared hosting so far and they support the latest in technologies.

They are the only reliable shared hosting service who support both PHP 5.2 and PHP 5.3, which is the reason I moved to their company. All of the other shared hosting services are about 2-3 years behind in technology and only support PHP 5.2 which has been unsupported for more than 2 years now.

I’ve never had any down time with them.

They support unlimited domains, storage and transfer (within reason of course, don’t try to be YouTube). For the unlimited domains you’d need the Baby Croc package, there’s no need to go for the more expensive business plan.

You can use these one of these two permanent discount coupons if you like
      PERMANENT25 – This will give you a 25% discount
      PERMANENT995 – This will give you a $9.95 discount (minimum 1c)

There are many alternatives, but their technology is getting old and outdated. GoDaddy is the almost the worst possible choice. JustHost is terrible and always trying to charge you an extra few dollars.

Whatever you choose, best of luck!

Does Better Business Bureau Actually Stop Businesses From Scaming You? I just recently had a company that unlawfully obtained my account information through an affiliated company and then proceeded to charge me under the pretence that I somehow had an account with them. I got the whole thing taken care of with my bank and have changed all of my account information and have reported them…but what now? I googled the company and there are literally thousands of reports of people who were victims of the same scam and they date back several years. So it makes me think…why hasn’t BBB done anything to stop them? (btw, the company is Privacy Matters)

    View Comment
    1. Reply

The Better Business Bureau does nothing to stop them for the simple reason that the Better Business Bureau CAN’T stop them. There is a popular misconception that the BBB, when contacted about a dishonest business, will step in to get your money back and then try to shut the company down. They won’t. They can’t. They are not a government agency. They are a private organization and they lack any power or authority to take any action against any company.
If you complain about a company to the BBB, they will forward your complaint to the company and forward that companys response back to you. They will not get involved beyond relaying the communication back and forth. To be honest, they a pretty much worthless in helping to resolve a problem and they even acknowledge that fact.
Instead, the primary function of the BBB is to provide a database of complaints against various companies. You are supposed to check with the BBB before doing business with someone to find out if they are honest and reliable.
When someone says, “I’m going to report you to the BBB!” most companies just laugh and laugh because they know that the BBB does not get involved and has no authority to get involved. It’s a little like someone getting mad at you and threatening to report you to Better Homes and Gardens. Who cares? What are they going to do about it? Nothing.
The only people with authority to do anything are people who work with government agencies. Police, FBI, Postal Inspectors, etc. are the ones to call if a crime has been committed. (The Secret Service handles credit card fraud.) You can also report things to the FTC, FCC, or whatever regulatory agency oversees the type of company that has violated state or federal regulations. You only report things to the BBB as a way of warning other people about a ba business. That is the sole function of the BBB.

Some Help With Web Hosting Service? Someone can tell me of a cheap web host in where I could load data files such as powerpoints and images so people visiting the webpage can download it??? I want to make a website and don’t know much of that topic. Thanks
I not just looking for a web host, I looking for a web host in where is possible to LOAD data files that the visitors visiting my website can DOWNLOAD.

There are many web hosting providers and you might become confused to choose which one.

I recommend reading reviews so that you may compare and become more familiar with the hosting companies before making a decision. I have many websites and I often visit to get familiar with the current top hosts. There you will find the best and cheap website hosting, rankings, and reviews of the top web hosting provider’s worldwide.

Web hosting doesn’t have to be expensive if you’re on a budget like me. Take a look at the #1 rated web host in the site I just gave you. They currently have a great offer. That’s as cheap as it can get when you’re being offered unlimited disk space, bandwidth, and free domain for life.

You should also be aware of scams and unreliable hosting companies. I have been scammed before but since I started paying attention to the website I just mentioned I’ve been well protected.

      Good Luck!

New To Using A Paid Web Hosting Service — How Do I Set It Up? :I? So, usually I use to host sites and I can use it rather well. It’s easy and straight forward. I have a site that runs perfectly on there.

However, my friends and I are attempting to do a big project together. So we decided we should purchase our domain, and we looked into hosting services that had more to offer than We paid for one, but have no idea how to set it up. :/

It uses the ‘cpanel’ (control panel), and has the roots folder and public_html. I’ve tried making index.html in there, and added the coding to it. All the necessary css and images are uploaded as well, but it doesnt seem to be working at all. When I go to our main domain (Im not revealing this), it just says
    “Hello There!
This website is currently under construction.

If you are the web hosting account owner, please be sure to delete this page after you have uploaded your website. If you’re visiting this site please check back soon!”

How do I make the index/home page actually show up? We’re using

    Please, only helpful answers. I know I’m pretty retarded ~ You don’t have to point that out. D;

Its good you selected a hosting service that has Cpanel.

If you are hosting the site on a different hosting company from that where you registered the domain you will have to change the DNS (Domain Name Servers) to that of where you are having the site hosted. You do it from within the domain registration control panel for your domain name. It can take up to 48hours for the new DNS to be recognized. Your hosting company should have advised you the DNS to use.

Its best to create your site using a web editor and then uploading the complete site to the public_html folder using a ftp program such as Filezilla rather than from within the Cpanel (it just seems to be easier).
