    (TOP 100 REVIEWER)

This review is from: Web Design with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery Set (Paperback)

This Jon Duckett’s two-book set consisting of ‘HTML & CSS: Designing and Building Web Sites’ and ‘JavaScript & jQuery: Interactive Front-End Development’ is great way for people new in web design to using this visually attractive books dive into HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery.

Because I previously reviewed both titles and they deserved very high position on my all-time web design book chart I think it would be best to summarize both reviews below.

    – HTML & CSS: Designing and Building Web Sites’ –

I should start this review by saying HTML & CSS: Design and Build Websites by Jon Duckett is a beautifully designed book. Although this alone should not be a reason to buy any book, all visual learners will be thankful because it makes the process of learning easier, featuring graphics explaining core concepts, combined with code snippets and images how something would look like on the web.

The book is examining many aspects of HTML5 and CSS3, comparing new methods to the older ones, explaining in process when and why any of them would be useful. Although some things are always changing in ever changing web design world, for sure but it would provide necessary information for designers new to HTML and CSS.

Book includes many useful design resources; web standards, free font libraries, color picking tools, typography and even search engine optimization (SEO) are discussed.

These days knowledge of HTML, CSS and especially JavaScript is becoming increasingly valuable for job search, promotion or salary increase. Even if there are dedicated developers, a designer should at least poses a basic understanding of the possibilities and limitations of HTML and CSS techniques. This book can help you learn these technologies for sure.

The only drawback for some would be that the book lacks the depth of detail needed to get into more complex layouts, for enhancing a website already built. But it should be fair to say that was beyond this book’s purpose, this is an excellent resource for a learner trying to expand her/his skills. For this purpose I could recommend you “CSS Mastery” book written by Simon Collison, Andy Budd and Cameron Moll.

Through book Duckett will gracefully guide reader into writing HTML, explaining its purpose tag by tag in same time providing a clear visual reference. Use this book to dive into HTML for the first time, but also intermediate users could use it as a visual reference for HTML tags during coding.

As final verdict, if you’re new to intermediate user with HTML and CSS, this book should be an excellent buy. I definitely would recommend it to those who self-taught students or as required read in the school design departments.

    – JavaScript & jQuery: Interactive Front-End Development’ –

As I wrote for ‘HTML & CSS: Design and Build Websites’ the same thing can be said for ‘JavaScript and JQuery: Interactive Front-End Web Development’ – it is simply beautiful book to go through.

While in the previous book the main subjects were HTML5 and CSS3, this time author discusses JavaScript and jQuery teaching methods how to make your pages simpler in terms of coding, while on same time more interactive and interesting for end user. The only constant things in ever changing web design world is change, though JavaScript and jQuery which appeared almost 20 and 10 years ago were able to impose due to their variety and available options from one web generation to another.

As was the case with his previous book, Duckett again doesn’t disappoint in terms of design resources – inside numerous samples of codes and user exercises can be found that enable novice Java web designer to start working instantly.

Beside first general chapter, the book is divided in additional twelve chapters which respectively deal with following subjects:
    – Basic JavaScript
    – JavaScript functions, methods and objects
    – Decisions and loops
    – DOM (Document Object Model)
    – jQuery
    – Using Ajax and JSON
    – Using APIs
    – Debugging and dealing with errors
    – Content Panels
    – Filtering, searching and sorting
    – Form enhancement and validation

Though the book shines in the field of design and interactivity, the only drawback for more experienced users will be the lack of content for the more demanding, though this book is still primarily mode for the new and intermediate users, while the more experienced can use some of the other JavaScript titles that I have also previously reviewed, such as ’JavaScript & jQuery: The Missing Manual’ or ‘JavaScript: The Definitive Guide’.

Therefore, looking overall ‘JavaScript and JQuery: Interactive Front-End Web Development’ is fantastic book for new to intermediate user…

Watch out for this publisher’s books, October 28, 2014

The content and presentation of these books are excellent. Sadly the quality of the binding should be an embarrassment to the publisher. Without ever having folded the spine back the book literally fell apart. The publisher refused to refund or replace the book. While I really like the way it’s written, I’ll steer clear of this publisher’s products from now. Especially since there are so many fine books on the subject.
