Mobile Design

Mobile Design

It is important that you are always on top of what is current when it comes to web design. From the latest technologies to what people want in a website, trends change every year. This article will prime you for what is relevant in 2013, ensuring that the websites you design are at the cutting edge of what’s hot.

Colored Background

The first trend, which is likely to be obvious to you, is mobile design. Everyone seems to have the Internet on their cell phones or tablets today, and you should cater to their needs. That means creating websites which are mobile friendly, having less graphics and smaller chunks of text. As you begin to design a website, think of mobile users before anything else. Build a simple design that can grow to accommodate desktop users, either in a single site or by creating multiple websites. You may want to develop multiple websites for each type of device.

Creating WebsiteWeb Designs

With CSS3 introduced, graphics are beginning to be phased out of web design. For example, you no longer need a huge, bandwidth-consuming graphic to create a gradient on the back of your page. Even rounded corners on text boxes can be created with CSS3. Drop shadows are yet another element you can create through CSS today. That means your websites will load faster and look better than ever.

Design

When it comes to design in 2013, minimalism is king. This not only accommodates mobile users, but creates a design which is pleasing and stress-free. If you use white space around your text, people will focus on your content more quickly and thoroughly. Remember that white space doesn’t have to be white, just empty. You can have a colored background and it will still be very effective. The less cluttered your page is, the more likely people are to stick around and read what you do have to offer.

Design Choice

You may have noticed that many sites, especially online retailers, are using huge photos as backgrounds, integrating them seamlessly with their design. They build emotions in the visitor easily and effectively. This is a great design choice for your front page, but likely won’t work on deeper pages on your site. If your website is a portfolio, it allows you to quickly make an impact when providing your content to the visitor. Be sure to only use this method sparingly to help save on bandwidth and load times.

Desktop Users

Many sites today allow you to scroll infinitely. For example, Facebook, Pinterest or Twitter all offer this service. If you run a blog, you can use this same idea to allow post after post to appear. A traditional website often doesn’t have enough content to allow for this, but a store or even photo gallery could make use of the technology for infinite scrolling.

Drop Shadows

After reading this article, you now know what is going on in 2013 when it comes to web design. That ensures that you will remain head and shoulders above the competition as you create websites. To be successful, you must remain up to date, so continue reading articles like this one and learning all you can.

      Hi,

To learn web design, first you have to learn HTML. HTML is very easy to learn. Just type some code (tags in HTML terms) in windows notepad & here you are..the most basic of your website is created. After that you can learn CSS for adding presentation i.e. colors, fonts etc to the HTML. & the interesting thing is that you will also write CSS in windows notepad. Then you can learn Javascript for adding functionality. After that you can move to advance level of web designing.

So, the software to create & design a website is Windows Notepad.
(You have some image editing software as such a Adobe Photoshop or try free downloadable GIMP)

I suggest you to use Adobe Dreamweaver as it will be very much easy for you to design your website.

Also, there are lots of website for learning HTML/CSS & Javascript in the internet. So feel free to search from the internet.

Also, you can purchase the following books for the reference.

      http://www.amazon.com/HTML-Beginners-Guide-Wendy-Willard/dp/0072130261

      http://www.amazon.com/Web-Design-Beginners-Guide-Second/dp/0071701346/ref=pd_sim_b_3

      Best of luck ?

Where Can I Find A Good Web Design Affiliate Program? I am not good at web design but would still like to offer web design services. Do you know of any companies that offer a commission per sale for a website? I do not want to create a website and have an affiliate link, I would rather go to local businesses and see if they are interested in having a website created for them.

So basically I go to a business, see if they want a website. If they do, somehow I can refer them to a company and make a certain amount per sale.

Do you have any companies in mind?

      Great question!

I do a bit of freelancing myself, and actually have referred a few businesses to a local web design firm here in Oregon. They do work nationally, and paid me a 10% finders fee. They’re called Alphabetix. Check them out!

What Are Some Good Books For A Print Designer Looking To Move To Web Design? I am a 15+ year veteran of print design. I dabbled in some web design and simple HTML programming, GoLive, etc. in the past; however, between having on-site programmers and transitioning to a position with no web design opportunities, the technology has eclipsed me. I am looking to delve back into web design & programming on a freelance basis and I am wondering if there are any good books out there to get me started. Anything from design fundamentals to basics of programming would be fantastic.

I would recommend checking out the books available at sitepoint ( http://sitepoint.com ) – they have a lot of good resources available for web design. If you’re also looking to showcase your skill you might want to try getting a certification in web design. logiczap ( http://logiczap.com ) provides certifications in html, css and php. Whatever route you choose I wish you good luck!

Web Design is to create a website with the specifications your customer asked for, creating a theme that fits your customers idea or product, the text font, the colors, the images and everything used needs to make sense to create an ideal theme and message for an idea or product.

In these times where everything is becoming virtual, a wide quantity of customers are searching for webdesigners that are able to create virtual-online stores.

In order to be able to create that you most learn Graphic software like Photoshop`s Adobe, Macromedia`s Flash MX or 8, etc. To create the code for the online store you must learn to use MYSQL, PHP, DB and other languages.

I prefer going to a school to learn rather than online classes.

The income you can get depends on your creativity with your work and how good you promote/advertise yourself.

How To Start Web Designing? I recently developed interest in Web Designing.
I already know C programming so learning programming would not be a problem for me. The actual problem is how do i start web designing ?
I Got few answer by friends saying learn HTML5, PHP etc but not really sure about their answer ?
I also know Photoshop if that helps in web designing.
So, can someone tell how do i start ? By which language, software and also which book is recommended.
For a novice to become a professional web designer.
    Thank you in advance.

You can start learning Web Designing in many ways.

You have said that you want to learn ‘Web Designing’ but saying that people have told you to learn HTML, PHP, etc. Do you want to learn ‘Web Design’ or ‘Web Development’?
HTML is mostly used to develop web pages, sites, etc.
PHP can be used for both.
CSS is usually (99% of the time) used for design.

Also, Photoshop would be used for web design and you would probably use Dreamweaver for web development.

Anyway, there are more ways to learn these coding languages, no matter what. You could learn online, participate in a online course or do a web development, design course. Also, go to your local library and have a look for any coding books, as I am sure there would be a few. I am not exactly sure what would be best, but maybe go and find what is best for you.

If there are any other questions, I would be happy to answer them.

Mobile Device CSS Design – Inline Lists? Do inline lists not work when designing for a mobile device? I’m trying to make a horizontal menu but the styles aren’t being applied. I’m using code from Listamatic (which renders properly in a regular web browser) but displays as a regular, unordered list on a mobile device

Completely depends on the mobile device and the browser that’s running on it unfortunately. Something like Opera Mini/Mobile or Safari would probably render it fine, but other browsers such as the ones bundled with your couple of year old average Nokia, or Pocket IE probably won’t.

Currently, the key to designing for mobiles is to keep things as simple as possible.

Web design alone may not get an attractive job. this is a good starting point but since you mentioned job I suggest you immerse into the world of animations..also for the web design paradigm has changed a lot these days. now a days app are developed to traget devices like tablet and smart phones and also most of the applications right from the time they are being designed for are device targetted. they are also following a different archictecture which uses a hybrid of web services and desk top design. so to be a a successful designer you may need to know the following which I consider the basics.

      1. HTML 5.0
      2. Android or iOS ( depending upon what you like )
      3. Web Services
      4. Adobe Flex modules
      5. Animations with Open GL and Open GL ES ( mobile )

How Can I Create A Mobile Application Of My Website? I have a website and I want to create a mobile version of my site, for people to install in their mobile phones. How can I do that? My website is a wix site, flash platform.

For your site to work well on a mobile handset, it must follow the accessibility design guidelines for building mobile Websites which are set by the W3C.

In mobile phones, the technology called the WAP is used for browsing. Because of the limitations of WAP browsers in terms of screen size and allowable download, you will need to strip down your current design.

The easiest way to build your mobile Website is to modify your existing Internet site to make it compatible for mobile handsets. If you decide to do so, expect that there will be big changes in terms of layout, design and construction.

You can also opt to make your own mobile Website from scratch, independent of your current Internet site. First, you can build your mobile Web site through the WAP or WML format (though HTML can be used too). WML cannot be run with all Web hosts. You will need to ask your Web host to make necessary changes in their Web server configuration before you can build a mobile site using it.

WML is the acronym for Wireless Markup Language which can be imagined as the light-weigh version of the HTML. It is similar in some ways, but deferent enough such that you might find it hard to switch from one to the other. Be warned, though, WML is limited in terms of features and tags.

Creating a WML document should be easy. You only need a notepad or reliable text editor, as with HTML. As a header, begin by typing:

      < ?xml version="1.0"?>
      < !DOCTYPE wml PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD WML 1.1//EN" "http://www.mymobilesite.com/index.xml">

This code will tell the mobile phone that it is currently reading a WML document and specifies which WML standards to use.

When you build a mobile website, your pages are called cards. Your mobile site cards are what is seen on the handset screen at one time. You can add more than one card into your WML document. Declare them by typing:

This makes a card with the ID “main” for linking purposes which will display a title text on top of the screen: This is My Mobile Site

It is important that you close your WML tags properly. One improperly closed tag will render the page unviewable. Each and tag must be closed with a corresponding and tag.

The good news is HTML can be used to design and build your mobile Web site. Here is a step by step guide to doing this:

To make things easy, you will need Adobe Creative Suite 3 which has Adobe Device Central and Dreamweaver CS3.
Launch Dreamweaver CS3. From the Create New option, click on More..
Choose HTML from the Page Type button then publish out with the use of the XTHML Mobile 1.0 profile which can be found beneath Doc Type.
You can now begin to code your HTML-based mobile Website. It is best that you go for a simple HTML design which is more focused on great content than all the other design perks. There are a number of online sources that can help you with the fine details of HTML coding for mobile Web sites. Try searching for these on Google.
Once you are done with the coding, you may want to test the mobile Web site you have built. You do not test it within the browser. Choose “Preview in Browser” then click on Adobe Device Central from the resulting menu. This changes your interface from a desktop to a mobile.
In Adobe Device Central, try to choose a target device (look at the Available Devices panel found on the left of the screen) which through which the mobile cards will be displayed. You have the option to choose them manually, or you can build a custom device profile which contains all the possible devices that you wish to support.
As soon as you are finished, your code can be loaded and rendered on the devices you have chosen.
It is difficult to support all the available devices out there. The best solution to keep your mobile Web site as clean and as simple as possible is to allow it to be viewable across as many mobile platforms and portable devices.

As you can see, there is a lot to consider to design and build a mobile website. The principles of mobile design are different than those of conventional Web site design. If you do not have the time or patience to learn new coding practices, then consider hiring a firm that specializes in mobile Web site design. Many firms also offer mobile SEO and PPC services as well, in anticipation for the growing need of instantaneous information.

Graphic Design Vs Web Design Vs? I would like to persue a career in graphics or web design with more emphesis on the creative aspect but not sure really what the difference is any suggestions ??

    View Comment
    1. Reply

Web Design is just Graphics Design, but with web pages. Generally the principles are the same – the rule of thirds, golden ratios, whitespace and all your basic graphics design principles still apply – but web design has a little more focus on computer-friendly colours, sizes and layouts; and more consideration for capturing and maintaining audiences.

And of course there’s the HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) topic (encompassing page structure and navigation as well), which is almost a whole field of its own.

Web Design has absolutely NOTHING to do with coding, hosting, purchasing domains etc, even though some people call that “web design” it is actually Web Development (and possibly Website Administration).
