Eye Candy

Eye Candy

Flash has long been used as a creative and eye-catching feature to greet visitors to your site. It was a great addition to any site in the past, but in today’s technological environment, it is simply too much with little in the way of return as people have seen all that can be done and it is simply an annoyance for those who stumble upon it. This article will point out why you should avoid flash at all costs for anything outside of a personal website designed for friends and family exclusively. Continue reading if you have considered using Macromedia Flash on your site and learn why you should avoid adding it.

Annoyance

One of the biggest drawbacks to Flash animations is the overall costs. If you are using your site to generate revenue, you need to know that it takes awhile to recover your initial costs for the site and hosting itself. The last thing you need to do is spend additional money for a tool that will not pay for itself over the coming months. If you are designing a personal site, while Flash is okay, again it is an expensive feature that in your case will cost money that you will never recoup.

Candy

One of the biggest problems with Flash, outside of the unnecessary expense, is that it causes serious delays in your site loading. Now in general, this would not be a big issue with people on PC’s and laptops using DSL or cable for their internet access but those using portable devices and phones are using a data plan and the problem is there. The number of individuals using smaller devices outnumbers those searching the web on computers making Flash something that not only dogs down the site loading time,Web Design but also limits the number of visitors as not all have newer devices that can play Flash. Remember that while portable device manufacturers make new models on a consistent basis, they are slow in offering O/S updates leaving many out in the cold and unable to view your site.

Consistent Basis

As stated above, animations are purely just eye-candy today that does little in the way of attracting visitors as it is simply old technology that dogs down a persons system. While still in use, it has gone the way of GIF files where it is interesting but does little for the visitor as it has been done to death. Think of a site that uses a flash screen that loads an intro video rather slowly before you can get to the navigational video. It looks great but your patience wears thin as you wait for what you came to the site to see.

Device Manufacturers

Finally in the day of SEO to improve rank and generate traffic, Flash does nothing for your site as it is not searchable by web crawlers. This means you have not only wasted bandwidth but also space that could be designated for content that can be crawled and used to improve your site ranking in search engines.

Eye

If you are looking for a website that reaches all who are interested in what you have to offer, you should consider avoiding Flash based content. It is simply expensive with zero return and it can actually hinder your search engine ranking. It is far better to focus on high quality content to attract consumers opposed to animations that could drive visitors away with little hope for recovering the costs via future sales.

The above flash player is a product of Adobe Systems and it is free. Most likely Firefox, a Mozilla product will work with this flash player.

good luck and thanks for asking at Yahoo!Answers.

      I have a few ideas:

Here’s a neat HTML tip. If you can find the direct URL link to the flash animation, (like by right-clicking somewhere on the page and going to ‘view source’ and find something with .swf on the end. You may want to press CTRL+F and search for ‘swf’), then you can put a link to the file in an internet page, right-click it and save it.
To make a link out of it, I suggest you go to http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/ and find a chapter, any chapter, go down to the bottom of the page to the Try It Yourself section and type in this: Right-click this as a link on the next page

Another idea is, if you use Firefox as your browser, search for a plugin called DownloadHelper. It lets you download any media file on the page you’re viewing. Just make sure to save it with .swf on the end of it so it recognizes it as a flash animation file.

Sorry if that was a bit confusing, please feel free to contact me if you need some clarification, I don’t mind at all!

How To Make A TUTORIAL With Macromedia Flash 8? I need a tutorial about how to make a TUTORIAL with Macromedia Flash 8 (lol).

I don’t need any hard functions, I just want people to allow to click next and so that I can just put some simple text in it, nothing more.

    Ty.
Okay, for the people who don’t get:

I just want a block of text and a next (or maby even back)-arrow to make a basic tutorial.

First, you make the forward and back buttons. Make them movie clips. Then Go to “behaviors” (a simpler actionscript). Then set the movie clip to Goto and stop at frame or label. Then you simply set it to go to frame 2. That will make it go to the second frame of the tutorial.
Then set the action script of all of the frames “stop();” (without the quotes).
From there, you can set all of the forward and backward behaviors. Then you add the text that you want on each frame.

I hope that this wasn’t too confusing!

Flash is pretty difficult to learn. When someone I know wants to make a flash website with nice animations and effects but doesn’t want to take the time to learn how to make them step-by-step in Flash, I recommend SwishMax. It’s like a lighter version of Flash, with tons of effects built in. Otherwise, you should try looking up “Flash Tutorials” in google and try doing some of the easier ones on animating an object until you get the hang of it.

Making Flash Animations? I was wondering how you make flash animations/games. I was also wondering how you can edit your voice and put it in the animation. What’s an easy way? I know you have to make all the slides but how do you make them? Like all the same sizes and stuff. Is there a program? Free, or one that you buy? Where you draw the pictures on paper/computer and import them? Sorry, I’m not good with computers…

    Thanks ?

Flash animation is made using Adobe Flash CS5 which allows you to build a series of frames and have them animate but it is also a powerful tool allowing script controlled animation and this allows for the creation of games and other dynamic content. Adobe Flash isn’t hard to learn but it is a very limited program without some good coding knowledge to power the animations. You can obtain a 30 day free trial from http://www.adobe.com/ but there are no other free solutions. I recommend you use a simple animation program like Corel Animation Shop.

I think, the following code helps you to embed your flash movie into your webpage.
(Spaces are left in-between the URLs in order to display the full content)

      < OBJECTclassid="clsid: D27CDB6E - AE6D - 11cf - 96B8 - 44553540000" codebase=" http://download.macromedia.com / pub / shockwave / cabs / flash / swflash.cab #version=5,0,0,0" WIDTH=width_valueHEIGHT=height_value >
      < PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="movie.swf" >
      < PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=high >
      < PARAM NAME=bgcolor VALUE=#FF6633 >
      < EMBED src="movie.swf" quality=high bgcolor=#xxxxxx WIDTH=width_value HEIGHT=height_value TYPE="application/x-shockwave-flash" PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.macromedia.com/ shockwave / download / index.cgi ? P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash" >

      All The Best.

Macromedia Flash Help? I am working on a project using flash
I have a map of NZ and when I move my mouse over it I want it to change colour.
    How do I do this?
    Thanks

First, Macromedia hasn’t owned Flash in years! It’s an Adobe product now.

To have the object change colour like that, you’d want to make the map of NZ into a symbol (by pressing F8 I believe), and then choose “button” as the type.

Once that is finished, right click your new button symbol and click “edit” or “edit in place” – then you can edit the four frames (mouse off, mouse hover, mouse down, mouse out) to manipulate it how you’d like.

In your case, it would be creating a new keyframe (F6) on the second frame (the mouse hover frame) and changing the image on that frame so that it’s a different colour.

Then, go back to the original Scene and press CTRL+ENTER to test the movie and see if it works.

      Good luck!

Chances are that your Flash Player plug-in is either missing or corrupted.

Assuming you are in the administrator account, first check Add/Remove Programs to see if you have Adobe or Macromedia Flash installed. If yes uninstall them using the new Uninstaller provided by Adobe and reboot (some computers require a reboot to completely uninstall programs)
      http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157

Then try to download the Flash player again from the following site:
      http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

However, it has been reported that some people are having issues downloading the full version directly from Adobe. If that is the case, you may want to try to download it as a standalone.
      http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/flash.html

Note: Flash Player is not a program per se. It is a plug-in to your web browser to allow flash content to be displayed and is required for many gaming sites.
      ================
Afterwards check your setting in IE. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and scroll down to the Multimedia section and ensure that the appropriate settings are indicated.

Can You Suggest A Good Flash Animation Program? If youve had various experiences with flash animation, do you know of a good one to buy?

Macromedia’s flash, is the only flash animation program… that’s why it’s called flash.
Flash is a vector based animation software. It’s probably the best for web based animations.
Another Vector based software is Toonboom. It’s supposed to be better for general animation, but more complected.
These are the two big names I hear kicked around. I recommend Macromedia Flash 8 if your just starting out and fooling around. Both programs are expensive, you can download a trial version of flash from their website. https://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/index.cfm?store=OLS-US&NR=0#loc=en_us&view=ols_prod&store=OLS-US&categoryOID=1148793&distributionOID=105&NR=0

For general animation Flash is fine. However, it is 1) expensive and 2) not the best choice for more complicated character animation. Anime Studio is inexpensive, and much more geared towards true animation than Flash (although Flash CS4 does offer a curve based time line now and IK bones – still a little fiddly to use with some caveats).

The standard version of Anime Studio may be more than enough for you, and is very affordable ($49): http://my.smithmicro.com/win/anime/index.html

The pro version offers more control, such as a true 3d camera:
      http://my.smithmicro.com/win/animepro/index.html

The time line is arguably easier to control than Flash’s.

You will still need Flash if you want to create interactive content – unless you go for Flash Animator, which is inexpensive ($49 again) and has a lot going for it: http://www.3dfa.com/

For more programming control you will need Flash, though.

Free alternatives for 2d animations are:
      http://www.synfig.org/
      http://www.creatoon.com/
      http://ktoon.toonka.com/

These may or may not support Flash as an output format.

What Is The Software Used For Flash Animation?

    1. Reply

To properly create Flash animations you need a program called Adobe Flash, which is non-free. There are (free) wysiwyg programs and scripting languages that let you create Flash animations, but afaik they don’t come near to what you can do with Adobe Flash. To play Flash animations you need Flash Player, which is free and usually a browser add-on.
