Comment on Professional Web Designers by Admin.
Web design is a broad term covering many different skills and disciplines that are used in the production and maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include; web graphic design, interface design, authoring; including standardised code and proprietary software, user experience design and search engine optimization. Often many individuals will work in teams covering different aspects of the design process, although some designers will cover them all. The term web design is normally used to describe the design process relating to the front-end (client side) design of a website including writing mark up, but this is a grey area as this is also covered by web development. Web designers are expected to have an awareness of usability and if their role involves creating mark up then they are also expected to be up to date with web accessibility guidelines.

I am a professional web designer/user experience engineer.
I started when I was about 30 and now I’m 38, so it’s never too late!
There are several areas of interest:
front end development
back end development
user interface engineering
Many of these overlap, but it’s a good idea to pick what you like and are potentially good at and focus on it. It’s better to specialize than try to be a jack of all trades…because you’ll consequently be a master of none. Spreading yourself too thin is easy to do since there is so much to learn.
My advice is to browse as many forums as possible, read as many technical books as possible, and learn as many programming languages as possible. Also, reading alone is not enough. You must DO the examples and create your own projects, widgets, test applications, foo functions and the like.
I would start with the following:
Get web hosting space to practice and play around (many free hosts are available)
Download web server software – XAMPP for Apache, MySQL and PHP
Enable IIS for serving up ASP etc.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

You’re confusing design with engineering, I think. If you want to design, go to design school. 🙂
Java (and Struts, and Beans, and J2ME) is used by many large Internet companies, and is fine for passing your computer science classes, but will probably less useful for an independent developer learning how to build Web sites than Ruby On Rails, PHP, or Perl. C++ is still used but almost exclusively for the back end, and Visual Basic is darn near useless.

Business Models are simulations of actual business functioning.
They act as ideal real life examples, and help participants actively discuss the pros and cons of the situation given.
A business Model gives a Full Account of any particular Business Scenario. Readers of this model/ Participants are then asked to discuss the strengths and weaknessess of it. Put it simply, one has to SWOT analyze the Business Model based on different parameters.
Each participant comes up with his/her own views on the subject. Cumulative views and different view points are then listed and ranked based on their importance and relevance.
Thus at the end of the session, a business models suitability and viability is drafted and conclusions are drawn thereon.
The more the Business Model Analysis a person does, the more exposed he gets to real life corporate situations.
Hence it is said, that Business Models act as Good Simulators.
Search Engine Optimization
A search engine is a service provided by some company (Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc.) which will search through millions of web pages for keywords that a person types into a field. For instance, if I type “Puppy” into a search box on Google’s web site, there are currently 40,800,000 matches available. If the search provider has a good search algorithm in their software, then the most relevant pages should be listed first. In my case, I’m a happy searcher, because after the Google Image samples, the first result listed is the Puppy Linux website, which is the only Puppy I would ever be searching for online. Most search providers keep track of what websites people will actually visit after doing a search. They then use the results to make sure those pages are closer to the top of the list for the next time someone searches for the same keyword(s).
Image search optimization is about using images on your website to draw more “click-throughs” from the search provider, thereby raising your rank in the search list. This, in turn, helps to ensure that you keep getting more visits to your site. A neat article I just found by typing “image search optimization” into Google Search is linked below.
