What’s The Difference Between Search Engine And SEO? Search engine optimization?

      Search engine optimization (SEO) :
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it “ranks,” the more searchers will visit that site. The leading search engines, Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft, use crawlers to find pages for their algorithmic search results.

      Search Engine :
A Web search engine is a search engine designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. Information may consist of web pages, images and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in newsbooks, databases, or open directories. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input.

You really do not have to take a course of SEO in order to have a basic understanding of what SEO can do. Here’s an article from Google which is self-explanatory:

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
      Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?…… and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
      very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain “generic” keywords, then anyone using
such “generic” queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
      at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, “Who’s my end user – is he on dialup or
DSL?” And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
      is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

      Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the “Title” metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The “Title” should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the “Title” is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the “Description” which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one’s goods and services.

And the very last category – “Keywords” are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as “spamdexed entries” which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
“Spamdexing” when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google’s spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
      directory.

      Good luck!

If you’re unable to figure out the basics of SEO you could always consider hiring an Internet marketing company to help you get started. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re having difficulty. It takes the professionals years to become experts at SEO, and they have to continually keep up to date with the information as it changes on a daily and weekly basis. If you do a bit of online comparison shopping, you should be able to find a company who is able to offer these services at a decent rate.

Ask any candidate SEO firm a simple question:

Show me one of your client’s site which can be found using “generic” keywords [not a domain name] as a search query on google.com or yahoo.com search engines and limit the generic keyword query to no more than 4 words. The search result must show that the website is PageRanked within the top 15 search results.

If your candidate SEO firm says that cannot be done. Then perhaps consider spending $20 on Peter Kent’s “Search Engine Optimization for Dummies.. which provides sufficient expert strategies to elevate your website to a greater audience on major search engines.

      Good luck!

Did You Teach Yourself Web Design? Hi there. Let me first say that I’m NOT asking how to build a website. I already know where to find tutorials and have some basic familiarity with HTML etc.

Trying to teach myself web design has been a bit of a struggle for me in the past, so I was wondering if those of you who have built your own sites would share a little bit about your experience. I’m talking about things like:

How long did it take you to build your first site? Which coding languages do you use and which do you avoid? Do you code by hand or do you use an editor like Dreamweaver? Or is there some other method that you use, like a content management system?

Basically, what advice would you give to someone starting out, things to embrace and things to avoid?

Noobish questions, I’m sure but I’d appreciate some experienced input. Anything helps, so go wild. Will choose a “best” answer. =)

I taught myself to design websites completely off the internet. I’ve built 4 and am working on a really nice one for an insurance agency. My first website I built with a friend on free hosting using very basic html, it’s a good idea to have a project and build it for somebody else. They tell you what they want and you have to sort out how to make it.

As far as languages HTML is obvious, CSS is a must if you’re going to build websites, don’t ever design one using tables for layout I promise you it is worth the effort to learn CSS (I learned it mostly off of htmlgoodies.com it’s a pretty good site). I code by hand in TextPad, I find any WYSIWYG editors tend to write very “dirty” html and I like mine to be clean and concise. Textpad is a fairly simple java editor but it also does very well with html, it colors the tags and things that are in quotes so it helps you keep from making mistakes without being too intrusive, it additionally has some nice tools that are better than notepad like the ability to have more than one document open and a save all feature.

If you’re looking to design more complex websites you should download wamp server which allows you to locally have a mysql database and PHP. I’m not sure if PHP is better than Perl, I chose it on a whim and it’s been fairly easy for me to pick up.

For advice I would recommend not cutting corners, when you know you’re doing something that’s not technically right but it would appear to render properly and look okay… change it. It seems easy at the time but invariably you will go to change something and it will screw the whole thing up and you’ll have to do it anyways. Also (I doubt this would happen since they’ve fallen out of favor but here it is anyhow) stay away from frames, they aren’t used anymore and websites just look silly if they have them now. Finally never be afraid to ask for help, when you’re stuck on something there are forums where people will give you very helpful advice and often suggest solutions you didn’t even think of and do most of the work of solving the problem for you. In general people are very helpful, don’t be afraid to let them help you.

If you have any questions or want any advice/sites that I use email me at cbahr@paigeinsurance.com

I also do web design and purchased a notebook for such. From experience, you may want to avoid Toshiba.

I have had nothing but trouble with the Toshiba I purchased. To make matters worse, their customer support is practically non-existent. They are very unhelpful.

Since then (and please do not mistake this for an advertisement), I have gone into the custom computer building business. I have custom notebooks for my wife and I… and they are really solid machines.

Moral of the story… if you want a machine that satisfies your needs (and you have the know how)… build it yourself. That way, you get what you want, how you want it.

Search Engine Optimization? Plz help me in optimizing my site http://www.dsu.edu.

      Often we get asked to do search engine optimization for various clients who have existing websites. We will review the websites, and we are amazed at the blunders made by the previous webmasters. Some of those blunders are;

Using images in place of text.
No use of alt text in value added images.
      Over use of images.
      Lack of headings tags.
Poorly written title and description tags.
      What do these all mean?

Using Images in Place of Text – Often, you will see a logo in the corner of a website with a company slogan, or a bulleted list of services on a website that are no more than an image. A search engine spider can not read the text in an image, it sees it as nothing more than an image. To see what your website looks like to a search engine spider, go to http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/spider-simulator/

No Use of Alt Text – When writing your html and inserting images, you will probably enter code that looks something like this...
      img src="images/website_hosting2.gif" mce_src="images/website_hosting2.gif" alt="website hosting" width="16? height="16? border="0?

Notice the alt= part. This is an opportunity to associate the image with a valuable keyword, be be aware of keyword stuffing as alt tags are intended for ease of navigation for individuals with disabilities.

OverUse of Images – This has more of an impact on the visitors browsing experience and has an impact on load time of your website. Overuse of images can dilute your keyword density as well. Remember, content is king.

Missing Heading Tags – Headings tags are used to give emphasis to certain words or paragraphs within the context of your website. This is typically done by using a H1, H2, H3 or other H tag. These tags tell the search engine spiders that particular emphasis should be put on this term when evaluating what the website is about.

Poorly Written Title and Description – This is just what it implies. A poorly written title or description of your site can have a devestating effect on your seo efforts.

      Additional on page factors that impact SEO that aren't as obvious are;

      Poor code to text ratio.
Content too far down in the code.
      Low or excessive keyword ratios.
      Low keyword prominance.
      Excessive use of tables.
      Use of frames.
      URL Structuring for dynamic websites.
      Duplicate Content/Canonical Issues.
      No Site Map
Excessive Use of Java or other scripting.

The lists above do not address all potential SEO killers. Addressing these items alone does not guarantee successful placement in SERPS (Search Engine Placement Results), but one can not have a successful seo campaign by ignoring these. When designing your website, make sure that you are observing SEO Best Practices. Doing so will make your seo campaign much easier in the long run.

I Need An Opinion On My Web Design Project.? Alright, I made a website for my web design project. I need some opinions on it please. I’ve only finished my front page so don’t expect my links to work just yet. Thank you.

By the way, it’s just a website project and it is not meant to go on the internet. We’re just learning how to make tables.

Good job Krista, I like it. Of course, I already told you my opinion on msn. Lol. If I were making it, I would put like a light brown colour like a box’s or sand, and make it look like a tile (with texture, kinda like a book’s or something) and make it repeat across the background. But other than that, it’s nice. But that’s my opinion if I were the one making it. But I like it! Good luck with your project! It’s not like Ms. McEdward’s going to be shunning all your mistakes. Good effort!

      Edit:
One of you guys (not mentioning) are going too harsh on her… It’s just the beginning of the year and she’s just going to start and take this course. She is new to it. She is in grade 10, and I can say that most people might not be able to design such a thing in our grade. You can see her effort, and that’s what our teacher also marks us on. So if you have to criticize, please say it in a nicer way. I’m not saying don’t criticize, because criticism helps people, but please use constructive criticism.

Thats a topic that many have debated countless hours over, the 2 meanings that it has are

web design is the job of a web designer, a person who designs webpages, draws them in some graphics program, like photoshop.
(thats the real meaning, but many people new to the web, mistake the web designers for people who develop and design websites)

basically Web designers are usually referred to people who make websites.

web design is the design of a website, visually and layout.

but it also often means the design of the code making up the website.
