Where’s My Yacht?

A yacht in Lorient, Bretagne, France

While I was pedalling into work this morning, I was listening to the morning show on KBOI radio. The talk of the day was all about “free” cell phones and other government waste. Wow. I had no idea how stupid this phone program is. Really opened my eyes.

The original intent of the program was to provide lower income families with a phone for emergencies, and so that they could look for work or be contacted by potential employers or temporary job services. The program has actually been in existence for years (so much for the “Obama phone” jokes), and up until recently was not a real waste of time and money.

Are You Losing Your Health Coverage?

English: President Barack Obama's signature on...

I had a conversation with a liberal a few months ago about Obamacare. I kept asking for him to explain how we’d pay for it, he kept telling me how he was excited a lot of underprivileged people would now have health care. I never got an answer and, needless to say, the “debate” went nowhere.

Well, under the guise of “redistribution of wealth“, it now looks like we’ll have a brand new group of underprivileged folks – those who have worked hard to have health care, and will soon have it stripped from them. Read on…

Can We Inflate Our Way Out of Debt?

Comparisons of the changes in the National Min...

Obama: We can’t cut our way into prosperity.

Republicans: We can’t tax our way into prosperity.

Man behind the curtain: Hey, why not inflate our way into prosperity?

It’s a simple theory. If you have a lot of fixed costs (mortgage, car loans, student loans, credit cards, medical bills, etc.), and your income doubles, then your fixed expenses will account for a smaller percentage of your income. You now have more money to spend on consumer goods, right? You’ll help the economy, right?

$2.93!

Previous Fred Meyer logos

That’s how much I just paid for gas at the Fred Meyer on Chinden Blvd. And, like my brother-in-law Scott said to me last week during our family Christmas party, “Bet you didn’t think you’d ever get excited about $3 gas“. Well, I am excited, and here’s why.

I’ve been saying all through the economic debacle of the last 4 years, gas dropping into the $2 range (preferably closer to the $2 mark), would be the best thing that could happen to us economically. Not tax cuts, not trillion dollar money injections into the economy, not wishful thinking. No, the best thing would be a drop in the cost of energy. (Which is why I was so “for” Romney in the election – he wanted to create an American energy surplus).

Rats

The aftermath of the election has been enlightening, to say the least.

Basically, the big population centers re-elected Obama. Taken to the extreme – the people who “live like rats” re-elected him.

Go figure.

If you look at a map of the electorate by county (the smallest division I’ve seen to date), most of the country is bright red (Romney). Every map that I’ve seen (like in this great video from Wired.com)

shows the discrepancy in the vote. It makes a certain amount of sense, actually – those areas where people are packed in like sardines have always relied on “guvment” to keep their perverse lifestyle from falling apart at the seams.
