In order to succeed in search engine optimization, it is vital that you are correctly using keywords. The first step in this process is correctly identifying the keywords you should be using. Your keywords should contain words and phrases that will attract your audience to your site. Many phrases should be very obvious. For instance, if you sell sports equipment, you should focus on words and phrases like “sports equipment”, “baseball gloves”, “baseball bats”, “men’s basketballs”, “girl’s basketballs”, etc. However, keep in mind that you should utilize other phrases that are not as commonly used in order to generate better results. If you have never heard of meta description tags, these are tags that provide a short description of the content of your website. Think of them as movie previews. Just like movie previews provide a preview of a movie, a meta description provides a preview of your website. It is important that you fill these meta description tags with solid keywords.

Be sure to include a site map on your website’s title page. A site map is a list of all your website’s pages. How Does Search Engine Optimization(SEO) Work? Do You Have To Pay For It? I’m kind of new to this and I’m curious how someone goes about doing this. Like do you have to pay Google to get ur site on the top of the list or what? And if it is at the top of the search, is it like that forever?

      Hi,

      No, SEO doesn’t cost anything, It’s how you organize and structure your site so that the search engine spiders come to your site and index it so that people can find it. Since there are billions of websites out there, you may get listed but you’ll probably just be added to the bottom of the list unless you use search engine optimization.

      The way to optimize your site is to use the right keyword-focused content. If you want to know what that entails, here’s an article that explains it: http://www.simple-internet-strategies.com/search-optimization.html

      There are ways to pay Google to get to the top of the list but you would be clearly marked as an advertiser and therefore, you probably wouldn’t get clicked on as often as the unpaid listings. I don’t have stats to back that up but it makes sense, doesn’t it? Who willingly listens to an advertiser? ?

      Best Regards,

      Healthy Mom

    Is It Bad To Copy Your Entire Meta Description Into The Body Text? I’m just learning about SEO and recently I created an area right underneath my header to describe each page. I basically use the same sentence in that part of the body as I do for that page’s meta description. Will that somehow hurt my rank? Will that be considered duplicate content?

      No it’s not bad. Your meta tag description or keywords should be displayed high up on your web page.

      Duplicate content would be you having the same content (text) as another website, not your own.

    Meta Tags (keywords And Description)? Some developers build my website without adding meta tags. Now They are asking money to insert the meta tags. But I think I can do it with a little help.
    I try to open the index.php and I don’t find anything related to the title, keywords and description.
    But, in config.php, I have the following:

    //SITE CONSTANTS
    define(“TITLE” , “Dogs for Sale | Puppies for Sale”);
    define(“ROWSPERPAGE” , “10”);

    //DIRECTORY PATHS
    define(“PROFILE_IMG_DIR”, “uploads/”);
    …..

    In index.php (the home page)
    < ?php session_start(); include('includeconfig.php'); include("includes/classes/pagination_class.php"); $id=$_GET['id']; /** * Display NEWS **/ $objDB->Table = ‘pets_articles’;
    $objDB->Fields = array(‘pets_articles.news_id’,’pets_articles.news_title’,’pets_articles.news_desc’,’pets_articles.news_status’);

    $objDB->Condition = “pets_articles.news_status=’1′”;
    try{
    ….

    Would you please help me to add the meta tags to my website?

    Dynamic Google Description Meta Tag? I have a blog over at Blogspot (http://macksimumrage.blogspot.com) and I am wondering how to optimize my Google search result descriptions. As of now, I have no set meta tag description because it would just display that for each of my indexed sites. My question is how do I get Google to display the text in my posts rather than my “About Me” or Title sections on my page, which I believe Google is reading first, as it comes before my posts. For instance, if you search “site:macksimumrage.blogspot.com” in Google, a bunch of the posts description’s will be various labels, and other things, which I do not want. If this makes any sense, any help is appreciated.

    I have already looked at other ways how to do this, like putting in a line of html code for each post. But that isn’t really practical seeing as I have over 700 posts. I’m looking for an automatic way for Google to see each of my posts and just read the first line or so to get the description to come up in search results.

      Google has no problem indexing Blogger posts. I have a blog with Blogger, and I have blog posts that rank very well in their keywords

      The problem with your blog is the quality of content.

      Like your post for top movies for the first week of August. There’s nothing unique or original to the post as other sites that have more authority than your blog already lists those movies. Your post simply lists the top 10, nothing more in terms of analysis or commentary

      If you want to rank well, post new topics or post something highly informative about a known topic. Just don’t rehash what others are saying.

      Like the top 10 movies of the week — make sure you add your take on why these movies are ranking well.

      You don’t need metatag description or keywords for blogs — that’s why Blogger doesn’t offer it. All you have is your title and the content. Make the title highly descriptive of the content with all the right keywords, and then make sure your content is high quality. Then and only then will your blog rank well in the search engines

    Dynamic Description Meta Tag With Php? This is a very theoretical question, but I would like to have some informative opinions:

    I am busy starting a blog from scratch and would like to know about dynamic meta tags for blogs. What I want to do is to change the description meta tag for each blog post individually. I am NOT asking how to do it, I would like to know:

    1. Does it help with SEO – I am not really thinking in terms of getting to the top of the search in Google, but rather that someone who is searching sees what the post is about when they do find it.
    2. Should I do something like this – ….content=”< ?php echo 'Blogname, ' . $posttitle>“, or just the title, or do I need to create a little description each time separately…what is the best way to do it.
    3. How does Google actually choose the little description that goes with the title in each search category. I seem to remember that it doesn’t always match the meta description. Does anyone have any thoughts on how that works.

    The main thing that I am concerned with is that you don’t find some search query that has a bunch of nonsense, or on the other hand, just the plain description of my blog. I want something that appears professional each time a query is made. I am mainly concerned with Google (who isn’t) and how it looks in their search results.

      1. Of course it does.

      2. As far as I know, “sitename – title” and “title” is the same.
      But since you are talking about the meta description tag, you should not put only the title, you should write a short description.

      3. google will index and query both the meta description and the real content, but in different priority. The description quality affect the priority.

    Can I Copyright Protect My Meta Tags? Can anybody copy my meta keyword and descriptions exactly as I have created them even if they do not use my business name and replace with their own?
    Example:
    Hats, Shoes, and Coats. Free Shipping always at DSAHATS.COM (Not Real Names)
    Competitor chooses to publish:
    Hats, Shoes, and Coats. Free Shipping always at OURCLOTHESSHOP.COM (Not Real Names)

      Yes, anybody can copy “your” meta keywords and descriptions.

      It is not likely that someone would use your meta tags and description and not change the business name to their own.

      In the US, you cannot register meta tags or descriptions for copyright protection.

    Can You Put A Link In Your Meta Tag Description? Is a link in your meta description possible?
    Is it even possible to have a link in a search engine’s results description? If so can it simply be added to my meta tag? What would the code look like?

      No. Links use active HTML code and can not be placed there. If you just want to add the URL in the keywords or description, fine, but that’s not how you use these meta tags.

      There are different types of meta tags — there’s the title tag, description tag, keywords tag, even tags to tell the search engines if the page is to be indexed or not

      Meta tag description is a statement of what the site is all about. When crafting one, think of the snippet from the search engine that you want to be seen, as most search engines pick up what you have stated in your meta description tag as your site description.

      Here are examples of meta description tags

      TARGET.COM WEBSITE
      Welcome to Target

      CONSTANT CONTACT
      Email Marketing Solutions from Constant Contact

      From the above examples, here are the snippets from Google

      Welcome to Target
      Expect More, Pay Less at Target.com, the official Target online retail site. Shop the latest in Women, Men, Baby, Kids, Home, Bed+Bath, Furniture, Sports, …
      http://www.target.com/ – 94k – Cached – Similar pages

      http://www.constantcontact.com/index.jsp – 20k – Cached – Similar pages

      Unlike the meta keyword which some search engines such as Google ignores, the meta description tag is important. Google for example looks first at whether the site has a meta description tag, and when it does they use it for their search engine snippet. If the site has none, then they pick up ODP’s http://dmoz.org/ description of the site, if it has one.

      When writing your tag, think of what you want users to know about your site, and what will make them click to your site

    What Exactly Is Search Engine Optimization?

    View Comment
    1. Reply

      Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short, is a term which describes the process of taking advantage of all of the existing available resources in order to obtain a page one organic search result on search engines, without having to pay for it.

      All web site owners want as many visitors as possible to enter their site. Research shows that fully 90% of all internet traffic is delivered through search engines. Therefore, in order to get a slice of this traffic you must adjust your web site (fine tune it) to the point that the search engines want to share your site on page one.

      Think about it. When you go use a search engine and enter a word or phrase; do you navigate past the first page of results to find what you are looking for? Because most people don’t. That is exactly why everyone competes for page one search results.

      And that’s exactly what search engine optimization does. Hopefully. If you’re good at it.

      There are many tools that help with SEO. Here is one such tool that is free to download…

      http://instantmarketing.info

      There are also many good newsletters and ezines out there that will guide you on how to perform SEO on your own, without hiring someone to do it for you. You can subscribe to one such newsletter here…

      I hope this helps explain what SEO is. To find out more about all of the steps involved in the process, you should check out the two sites I just noted.

    Why Are Meta-descriptions Important?? ?

      A meta-description tag is of the form:

      This is the description that shows up with the site title. It also shows up as a site summary in many search engines so it has to be carefully designed. It should be a maximum of 170 to 200 words and should be descriptive yet concise and catchy. This is what makes search bot's task easy in categorizing a website according to the keywords and also lets users see the relevancy of a webpage in relation to their query.

    Default Meta Description? How Default meta description can help my website?

    View Comment
    1. Reply

      Hi Joseph, There is no default meta description and even if there was you would not want to use it. For SEO purposes you want your Meta Description to be unique. It is always best to come up with your own description based on the important keywords on your page. Many search engines like Google use the Meta Description information to display on search results pages. Do a search on Google and look at the description of one of the links, then click on the link and load the web page and then in your browser right click on the page and choose “View Page Source” and have a look at the code of that page and you will notice the Meta Description tag and the description will be the same as what was used by Google on the search results page.
