Search Engine Optimization Tips for Cornering the Search Engines

Search Engine Optimization Tips for Cornering the Search Engines

Have a read of the article below… We are sure you will find it dots all the ‘i’s’, and crosses all the ‘t’s’. On our site we strive to provide the most up-to-date information. Remember that you read it here first, and please tell your friends.

Optimizing Your Sites for the Search Engines

Cornering

A lot of people know that they have to do some kind of search engine optimization, or SEO, but they aren’t sure what that entails. Search engine algorithms rank sites according to keyword relevance, but that doesn’t mean anything to you if you’re not familiar with it. Here are some search engine optimization tips that you can do that are easy enough.

Engine

The first thing you want to do is to determine what your keywords are. What are keywords? That’s a great question. Keywords are words that your target customer would type into a search engine box. For example, if your site is related to fly fishing, a keyword would be “fishing”. Keywords can be more than one word, too. Another keyword for fly fishing is “fly fishing”. Choose keywords that you want to be recognized for. You would not want to use the word “cake” if your site was about fly fishing!

Engines

When you have your keywords, what do you do with them? Well, you use them in your content. You sprinkle them throughout your content the way you would put salt on a piece of meat. Much like salt, you don’t want to overuse your keywords. It should be natural usage, which shouldn’t be difficult if you’ve chosen the right keywords. >
SEE ALSO  Search Engine Spiders can Improve Sales

Now, the search engines send out crawlers to check sites to see what keywords they’re relevant with. If a search engine crawler comes across your site, it should be able to see, using our example from above, that you are relevant to “fly fishing”. It will rank you higher in its search results for fly fishing than it will rank a site about cheese.

Optimization

Keywords aren’t the only game in town, of course. Now that you have gotten some traction from your keywords, you have to turn your attention to the other part of search engine optimization: back links. The way the search engine algorithms see it, if you are highly relevant to your keywords, other people will be linking to your site. Therefore, you need to build as many backlinks as you can. How do you do that?

Optimization Methods

One excellent way to build backlinks is to write guest posts and articles for other people. Then, in your author box, you put a link back to your site. In fact, you can also embed a relevant link in the text of your article as well. This way, not only will you get backlinks for your site, but you are also going to be seen as an expert in your field, since your work is showing up around the web.

Optimization Purposes

Now, if all of this still sounds confusing, you can always outsource your SEO work. This is a good idea if you simply don’t have the time to do search engine optimization. Just make sure that whomever you hire has a provable track record of good results.

Optimization Strategies

Now that you’ve had a chance to read this article, you know better how to do some search engine optimization of your own. Make sure you give every tip a try so that you are doing what you need to do to be ranked better by the search engines.

If you have some tips on the subject that you would like to share with our other readers, please leave your comments. We would welcome your input into the discussion.

Search Engine Optimization In Richmond Va? I have just opened a small photography business here in Richmond Va, and am wondering about choosing someone to do my Search Engine Optimization in Richmond. First off, does anyone by chance know of a solid search engine optimization company in Richmond VA? I’m looking for results but also not to break bank!

I did a google search on “search engine optimization in richmond va” or something like that, but from there I’m not sure how to tell one company over another. Any tips greatly appreciated!

Gotcha, congrats on the new photo biz. I very much understand your confusion on all things SEO.
Lots of sharks in those waters.

A couple things I can suggest…If you have a photography biz, have you submitted your site to local biz listings like Bing or Google Places? On Search Engine Optimization companies in Richmond, I know of a few that are pretty good. My brother and law, and good friend have business there and use a firm called Fusion SEO. Both are happy with them so far. Anyway, check out Fusion SEO, and otherwise, look at submitting to the local biz listings.

Lastly, searching on “search engine optimization in richmond va” or whatever is good, but make sure you call and get someone on the phone, and firstly I’d say ask them for some proof of their successes with clients! Hope this helps.

Some Ebay Tips To Advertise A Few Items I Want To Sell? I want to attract more people to my items.

I’m not getting as many Views and Bids as I would like. How can I do some search engine optimization and stuff like that to attract more potential customers/bidders?

Use the max characters to describe your item in the title.
      – for example if you’re selling pj’s instead of just putting “PJ’S” put woman’s pajama bottoms sleepwear pink striped polka dots size L. etc . explain the item as much as you can.
try doing a 1 cent bidding on one of your items to attract people
do free shipping so that your item is on the top of the list.
      use google adwords

What Should I Think About Before I Publish A PDF EBook? I’m currently writing a book about search engine optimization for blog posts, and I’m thinking of publishing it as a Portable Document Format (PDF) eBook.

But what legal rights and so one must I be aware of? And can I publish the eBook as a download (secure payments trough PayPal) myself without further ado?

I’m a Norwegian resident so US taxes and so on is irrelevant.

I’m also interested in other tips for eBook publishing.

PS: I’m already aware of PDF encryption and metadata.

You need a lawyer, because it is you protection you care about. When someone dowloads and pays, they read and agree to the terms, duplication, and so on. Get a lawyer and a standard “disclaimer”

“If you build it, they will come” is not necessarily true on the Web. Putting a website up is one thing, but getting visitors to come to your site is another. The process becomes even more difficult if you have limited resources to market your business.

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

      1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement – if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

      2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important — and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more – that’s additional traffic that you get for FREE!

      Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Big Nose Bird Recommend this Site http://bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml
      CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
      Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html

      3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com’s “Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day.” http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm

      4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News. My website (see my profile) accepts free press release submission (no strings attached!)

      5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AhzreGmnCUicOoyedqypscUjzKIX?qid=1006022407481

      6. Improve your conversion. Getting visitors is one thing; getting them to buy your products is a whole different story. Read the article “10 Ways to Convert Visitors to Buyers” http://www.powerhomebiz.com/072005/conversion.htm for tips on how to improve your conversion rates.

      7. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:

      Craigslist http://www.craigslist.com
      Google Base http://base.google.com

SEO is one of the technique which can generate relevant response from target audience but that is not only one. I suggest that don’t just rely on one source of response only that is search engines.

      Keywords :
First check trends of search and keywords and locationwise demand and then decide prominence of keywords.
      try with google.com/trends
you need to check locationwise trend about tourism and interest of your target audience
google and socialmedia can help you exact requirement of target audience and then you can finalise for the keywords.
you can find tutorial on my youtube channel about it

What Should I Do To Be A Real Expert In Search Engine Optimization, Google Sponsored Like And These Staff? I was wondering if there is any sources to learn all the necessary things about search engine optimization. Thanks

Begin with reading the following article and helpful tips which you can incorporate into future client websites.

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
      Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?…… and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
      very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain “generic” keywords, then anyone using
such “generic” queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
      at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, “Who’s my end user – is he on dialup or
DSL?” And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
      is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

      Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the “Title” metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The “Title” should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the “Title” is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the “Description” which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one’s goods and services.

And the very last category – “Keywords” are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as “spamdexed entries” which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
“Spamdexing” when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google’s spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
      directory.

Here’s an example of a very highly-placed website on
Google.com: Begin with the very “generic” search query
“sandwiches downtown los angeles,” taking note to not
abbreviate Los Angeles to “LA” and of course, leave
out the parentheses (“). It will bring up some 2.4
million+ search results. Check out where “Nazos.net”
is ranked. It’s ranked No. 1!
Again, Nazos.net’s high web presence was achieved by
proper web design and placement of relevant metatags
      according to Google’s publication guidelines.

      Good luck!

SEO is a broad concept and changes continously. I can’t provide all SEO related tips on a single answer here, however I am going to share my findings after a quick analysis of your (your friends website)…

First; Avoid using frames & iframes on your pages…
Second; Almost all the content is presented using images instead of texts, search engines won’t (although it is technologically possible wouldn’t be feasible), therefore do not use images as your main content!

      A quick summary of key SEO terms are;
      – Keyword density in your page (Keywords that search engines can read!!)
      – Keyword existence in URL’s and URL Structure
      – Header Tags, Anchor text, inpage links, backlinks, image alt tags
      – Original & Fresh content
      – Domain Age
      blah blah blah…

And many more… These are just a few topics that should be investigated in detail…

You can PM me if you need more detail…

Search Engine Optimisation Tips? What questions need to be answered before optimising a website?
In baby steps: how do you perform the optimisation?
How do you measure the effectiveness after optimisation?

    Thanks

    View Comment
    1. Reply

      I’d recommend you get yourself a copy of Search Engine Optimisation for Dummies, because there’s a lot to it – far more than can be described here. Some key points are;

1). Research your keyword terms, as others have suggested – you can do it here http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ . This will give you the commonly searched for variants on your main word. The results you see are usually taken from Yahoo, so to estimate Google results, you need to multiply the results several times. Put these terms in your meta tags, i.e. the title and description tags etc. Also, get them into your main page text. If possible, put your most important keywords in a sub-heading because the search engines will give this greater importance than normal text. If possible, get the most important keyword or phrase into your URL as well because the search engine robots love that.
2). Post quality backlinks around the internet, in directories, and social networking sites, blogs etc. For the latter, take a peek at the page code and make sure they aren’t using the ‘nofollow’ attributes, because this will take away the usefulness of a link. In essence, the search engines rate the importance of a site largely on how much people are ‘talking about it’ across the web – and they are looking for backlinks. Another good tip is to use the most important word or words related to your site in the anchor text of any blog links posted (for example, if you sell horses, when posting a blog comment, in the ‘name’ box, write ‘horses’ and this will become the text that links to your website). This also gives you extra credence with the engines. AVOID RECIPROCAL LINKS – you get credit for links in, but penalised for links out. These days, there are so many places you can post your links across the web that reciprocals aren’t necessary. Also, avoid directories that want you to pay them, or say they will put you on a higher ranking page if you part with $10 etc. It’s an uneccessary waste of money.

That should get you going – good luck!

ANy Tips For Search Engine Optimization? Does meta data matter for search results in search engines?
where is the best place to put meta data?

What the best structure for metadata?

ANy tips for search engine optimization?

    View Comment
    1. Reply

Meta data is only used by search engine spiders. It appears above the HTML code that forms the underpinnings of your site’s presentation layer.

Meta data includes such things as your site’s name, URL and key word tag. Once the most important factor in search engine results, keyword tags in meta data don’t have the weight they once did.

      SEO tips:

      1. submit your site map to Google and Yahoo. This provides spiders with a set of directions and “personal” invitation.

      2. Add HTML title tags to each page. Each tag becomes a Google listing, thus providing many more site access points. That’s why, if I search “Harry Potter” on Google, one listing on the first search engine results page (SERPs) will be for Amazon. If I click on it, I’m taken directly to the Harry Potter page rather than coming through Amazon’s front door.

      3. Even though meta data stays the same from site page to site page, add it to every page. SE bots are none-too-bright.

      4. Avoid keyword stuffing. 2-3% is good. Anything over 5% starts to sound like gibberish.

      5. Use embedded text links in the main texts of your site. Search engine spiders follow links, so if you give them a lot of links within your site, spiders stay longer, index more and provide a more accurate picture of your site.

      6. Use your HTML description tag to appeal to humans, not spiders. The description tag content appears directly under the blue link for your site on SERPs.

      7. Avoid anything that even hints at black hat tactics, i.e. no invisible text, title tags match page data, keyword density of less than 5% in main text; 50% in headers.

      8. Place keywords in headlines, underlined, bolded or italic text.

      9. Focus on your top five keywords and phrases at first. Then, gradually expand your list.

      10. Finally, visit Google’s webmaster central. This search engine runs the web world so you might as well do exactly what the Googlistas want, and they tell you what’s legal (and good) and what isn’t regarding SEO.

      Good luck with your site,

Need Help With Search Engine Optimization? Hello all, I hope you can help.

I’m approx 1/3 the through designing a website.

When I first started on the site, I originally uploaded all the files to a temporary domain name http://www.riggerz.org just whilst I waited for a suitable DN to come through.

Anyway, as soon as I received the new DN, http://www.beautyboxworcester.co.uk I immediately pulled all the files down from the temporary DNS and uploaded then to the new one.

All good, site works etc etc…

Only problem is, when I started adding key words and description tags for google, they all point to the old DN. I don’t understand why this is though, I didn’t even start creating these keywords until after I received the new DN.

The words I typed into GOOGLE are ‘beauty box worcester’

Can someone help, this is a bad problem!!!!!

    Thanks all..

What keyword or keyword phrases are you hoping to be found with. If “bingbong bouncy” is your target keyword phrase then you are off to a good start. I can’t imagine too many searches for that keyword phrase though.

Figure out what keywords you should be going after, include them in your meta tags and then add some content to your pages (using those keywords, of course). Right now you have very little content for the search engines to index.

SEO is not something you can do overnight, or with a few tips and tweaks unfortunately. I think the post above is a good starter already!
The most important thing are keywords! Make sure they are in your texts, in your titles, in your headers, and if you can, in your urls.
Keywords are the words for which you want your website to be found. Think about them carefully, and, also think from the perspective of your visitors. You may think they will search for a specific keyword, for instance BMW, but they may be looking more using another keyword, say, beamer. So, it is important to incorporate those “wrong” keywords too.

Here are some good tips for you

      1. Insert keywords within the title tag so that search engine robots will know what your page is about. The title tag is located right at the top of your document within the head tags. Inserting a keyword or key phrase will greatly improve your chances of bringing targeted traffic to your site.

Make sure that the title tag contains text which a human can relate to. The text within the title tag is what shows up in a search result. Treat it like a headline.

      2. Use the same keywords as anchor text to link to the page from different pages on your site. This is especially useful if your site contains many pages. The more keywords that link to a specific page the better.

      3. Make sure that the text within the title tag is also within the body of the page. It is unwise to have keywords in the title tag which are not contained within the body of the page.

Adding the exact same text for your h1 tag will tell the reader who clicks on your page from a search engine result that they have clicked on the correct link and have arrived at the page where they intended to visit. Robots like this too because now there is a relation between the title of your page and the headline.

Also, sprinkle your keywords throughout your article. The most important keywords can be bolded or colored in red. A good place to do this is once or twice in the body at the top of your article and in the sub-headings.

      4. Do not use the exact same title tag on every page on your website. Search engine robots might determine that all your pages are the same if all your title tags are the same. If this happens, your pages might not get indexed.

I always use the headline of my pages as the title tag to help the robots know exactly what my page is about. A good place to insert the headline is within the h1 tag. So the headline is the same as the title tag text.

      5. Do not spam the description or keyword meta tag by stuffing meaningless keywords or even spend too much time on this tag. SEO pros all agree that these tags are not as important today as they once were. I just place my headline once within the keywords and description tags.

      6. Do not link to link-farms or other search engine unfriendly neighborhoods.

      7. Do not use doorway pages. Doorway pages are designed for robots only, not humans. Search engines like to index human friendly pages which contain content which is relevant to the search.

      8. Title tags for text links. Insert the title tag within the HTML of your text link to add weight to the link and the page where the link resides. This is like the alt tag for images.

My site contains navigation menus on the left and right of the page. The menu consists of links not images. When you hover over the link with your mouse, the title of the link appears. View the source of this page to see how to add this tag to your links.

      9. Describe your images with the use of the alt tag. This will help search engines that index images to find your pages and will also help readers who use text only web browsers.

      10. Submit to the search engines yourself. Do not use a submission service or submission software. Doing so could get your site penalized or even banned.

      Optimizing for the Correct Keywords
To get listed correctly in the search engines each page of your site that you want listed needs to be optimized to the best of your ability. Since the keywords that you decide to target will be used throughout the optimization process choosing the right keywords is essential. If you choose the wrong keywords you will not be found in the search engines. If you are not found in the search engines how will anyone find your site?

Since the keywords you choose to optimize your pages with are so important we have put together some tips to help you make sure that you make the right choices. You should utilize these tips when selecting keywords for each page that you plan to submit to the search engines.

Think “specific keyword phrases” not “keywords”. Why? Due to the extreme amount of competition for general terms in the search engines, if your keyword phrases are too general it is very unlikely you will rank well in the search engines. You stand a far better chance to rank well for specific phrases where there is less competition. The resulting traffic, since it is more highly targeted, should also be much higher quality too! Here’s an example for a site selling shoes:
      Much Too General Much Better!
      shoes

      men’s shoes

      women’s shoes
      imported italian shoes

      men’s leather penny loafers

      women’s aerobic sneakers

Try to think like your target audience. What would they search for when looking for the page you are optimizing? It is very easy to fall in the trap of coming up with a short list of what YOU would search for, but what about everyone else? They will not necessarily use the same keywords as you. You should try to come up with as many keyword phrases as you can think of that relate to the page you are optimizing. Try asking a few friends and family what they would search for when searching for a site like yours.

Check out your competition for ideas. Do a search using keywords that you already know you want to target and click through on the top sites that come up. Once on the site view the source HTML code and view the keywords they have in their meta tags – this should give you many more ideas! Make sure to only use keywords that relate to YOUR site or page. To view the HTML code simply click the ‘View’ at the top of your web browser then select ‘Source’, or ‘Page Source’.

You should develop a list of keyword phrases, following the tips on this page, for each page that you optimize for the search engines.

      ——————————————————————————–

      Optimizing Your Title Tag
Without question the title tag of your page is the single most important factor to consider when optimizing your web page for the search engines. This is because most engines & directories place a high level of importance on keywords that are found in your title tag. The title tag is also what the search engines usually use for the title of your listing in the search results.

      What it looks like:

Here’s the title tag of this page:
Your Title Tag – learn to optimize your title tag

      Where it belongs:

The correct placement for the title tag is between the and tags within the HTML the makes up your page.

      Tag limits:

We recommend that your title tag be between 50-80 characters long – including spaces! The length that the different search engines accept varies, but as long as you keep within this limit you should be ok.

      Tag tips:

We recommend that you include 1-2 of your most important keyword phrases in the title tag, BUT be careful not to just list keywords. If you just list keywords you risk being viewed as a spamming the engines which can ultimately lead to you being blacklisted by the search engines. Your title tag should include your keyword phrases while remaining as close to a readable sentence as possible to avoid any problems.

Make your title enticing! Don’t forget that even if you get that #1 listing in the search engines your listing still needs to say something that makes the surfer want to clickthrough and visit your site.

Since the length of your title tag could be a little long for some engines we suggest placing the keywords at the beginning of the tag when possible so that you do not risk having them cut off.

Each page of your site should have it’s own title tag with it’s own keywords that related to the page that it appears on.

      top

      ——————————————————————————–

      Optimizing Your Page Copy
The copy on your page is also very important in order to achieve better search engine listings. Actually, it is very close to being as important as your title tag so make sure you keep reading! By ‘copy’ we mean the actual text that a visitor to your site would read.

Did you know that just like a visitor to your site would read the copy on your page to figure out what you have to offer, the search engines do too? And what do you think the search engines are looking for when they ‘read’ your page copy? Keyword phrases, of course!

      Page text tips:

For best results we recommend that each page you submit has at least 200 words of copy on it. There is some cases where this much text can be difficult to put on a page, but the search engines really like it so you should do your best to increase the amount of copy where you can.

This text should include your most important keyword phrases, but should remain logical & readable.

Be sure to use those phrases that you have used in your other tags (i.e. metas, alt, headings, title, etc.) during the optimization process.

Add additional copy filled pages to your site. For example, how-to articles, tips or tutorials. These types of content pages not only help you in the search engines, but many other sites will link to them too.

Don’t ignore this tip! Seriously, optimizing your page copy is one of the most important things you could possibly do to improve your listings in the search engines. So, make sure you have plenty of it even if you need to redesign your site to work it in!

      top

      ——————————————————————————–

      Optimizing Your Meta Tags
Meta tags were originally created to help search engines find out important information about your page that they might have had difficulty determining otherwise. For example, related keywords or a description of the page itself.

Many people incorrectly believe that good meta tags are all that is needed to achieve good listings in the search engines, which is entirely incorrect. While meta tags are usually always part of a well optimized page they are not the be all and end all of optimizing your pages. In the early days of the web people were able to get great listings from optimizing just their meta tags, but the increasing competition for good search engine listings eventually led to many people spamming the search engines with keyword stuffed meta tags. The result is that the engines have changed what they look at when they rank a web page.

The search engines now usually look at a combination of all the best search engine tips to determine your listings, not just your metas – some don’t even look at them at all! What this means is that your page should have a combination of all our tips implemented on your page – not just meta tags. That being said, there are two meta tags that can help your search engine listings – meta keywords & meta description.

      What they look like:

      Description Meta:

      Keywords Meta:

      Where they belong:

The correct placement for both meta tags is between the and tags within the HTML the makes up your page. Their order does not really matter, but most people usually place the description first then the keywords meta.

      Tag limits:

We recommend that your Keywords Meta not exceed 1024 characters including spaces.

We recommend that your Description Meta tag not exceed 250 characters including spaces.

      Meta description tips:

Make sure you accurately describe the content of your page while trying to entice visitors to click on your listing.

Include 3-4 of your most important keyword phrases. Especially those used in your title tag and page copy.

Try to have your most important keywords appear at the beginning of your description. This often brings better results, and will help avoid having any search engine cut off your keywords if they limit the length of your description.

      Meta keywords tips:

Aside from what we mention in the other tips below you should only use those keyword phrases that you also used in the copy of your page, title tag, meta description, and other tags. Any keywords phrases that you use that do not appear in your other tags or page copy are likely to not have enough prominence to help your listings for that phrase.

Don’t forget plurals. For example, a travel site might have both “caribbean vacation” and “caribbean vacations” in their keyword meta tag to make sure they show up in both searches.

If you know of a common misspelling of a popular keyword that could be used to find your site you should enter it in your keywords meta tag. For example, a travel site might use “caribean ” in their keyword meta since it is a common misspelling for “caribbean”.

Watch out for repeats! You want to include your most important phrases, but when doing so it can be difficult not to repeat one word many times. For example, “caribbean vacation” and “caribbean vacations” are two different phrases, but the word “caribbean” appears twice. This is okay to do in order to make sure you get the phrases you need in there, but becareful not to repeat any one word excessively. There in no actual limit, but we recommend that no one word be repeated in the keyword meta more than 5 times.

If your site has content of interest to a specific geographic location be sure to include the actual location in your keyword meta.

      top

      ——————————————————————————–

      Optimizing Your Images “alt” Attribute
Did you know that any images on your page can help your listings too? Each image on your page can include a keyword phrase or two that relates to the image. This text will also show up & help those that may have their images turned off when visiting your site. This does not work for all engines, but it certainly does not hurt so we recommend you give it a try where you can.

      What it looks like:

Submit It! Web Site Submission Service

      Where it belongs:

You can add the “alt” attribute to any image on your page.

      Tag limits:

We do not recommend using more than a brief sentence or two to describe an image.

      Tag tips:

Be sure to use the keyword phrases that you also used in the copy of your page, title tag, meta description, and other tags.

Do not try to cram a bunch of keywords into the “alt” attribute. We recommend using no more than 2-3 per image.

Describe the image – do not just list keywords.

The “alt” attribute is also a good place for misspellings and plural keyword phrases that you may not have used elsewhere.

      top

      ——————————————————————————–

What you should not do. . . (spamming the search engines)
There are several things, considered “spamming”, that you can do to try to get your page listed higher on a search engine results page. Basically, you should never try to trick a search engine in any way, or you risk being blacklisted by them. Since the majority of your traffic will come from search engines the risk far outweighs the benefits in the long run. Below is a list of the more common things we recommend that you never do when trying to achieve better listings.

      Do not:
Do anything to trick the search engines into listing your site better. If what you are doing is not listed as one of our search engine tips the search engines will likely view it as spam and penalize you.

List keywords anywhere except in your keywords meta tag. By “list” we mean something like – keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, keyword 4, etc. There are very few legitimate reasons that a list of keywords would actually appear on a web page or within the page’s HTML code and the search engines know this. While you may have a legitimate reason for doing this we would recommend avoiding it so that you do not risk being penalized by the search engines.

Use the same color text on your page as the page’s background color. This has often been used to keyword stuff a web page. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.

Use multiple instances of the same tag. For example, using more than one title tag. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.

Submit identical pages. For example, do not duplicate a page of your site, give the copies different file names, and submit each one. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.

Submit the same page to any engine more than once within 24hrs.

Use any keywords in your keywords meta tag that do not directly relate to the content of your page.

How Long Does it Take to Get Listed?
Here’s the length of time it currently takes to get listed at each of the major search engines once you have submitted your web page.

      MSN Up to 2 months
      Google Up to 4 weeks
      AltaVista Up to 1 week
      Fast Up to 2 weeks
      Excite Up to 6 weeks
Northern Light Up to 4 weeks
      AOL Up to 2 months
      HotBot Up to 2 months
      iWon Up to 2 months

      top

      ——————————————————————————–

      Optimizing Text Hyperlinks
Did you know that text based hyperlinks can help improve your listing in the search engines? The search engines basically figure that if you are linking to something from your page whatever it is you are linking to is likely to be closely related to the content of your page. For that reason some of the engines actually look for keywords in the hyperlinks and any text immediately surrounding the hyperlinks. What this means to you is that if you can you should include your most important keyword phrases in the link itself and possibly the surrounding text.

      What it looks like:

A text based hyperlink is a standard HTML hyperlink like this one (the example link does not go anywhere).

      Tag tips:

Try to include your most important keyword phrases within the hyperlink itself.

Try to include your most important keyword phrases in the text that immediately preceeds, or follows the the hyperlink.

Becareful not to keyword stuff! Make sure your links and surrounding text are still readable and make sense after you include a keyword phrase or two.

      top

      ——————————————————————————–

      Optimizing Heading Tags
Although they are not used very frequently any longer HTML heading tags can help improve your listings in the search engines too. Since they are “headings” the search engines figure that they are very closely related to the content of the page that they appear on. So, just like with all of your other optimization efforts you should include your most important keyword phrases in heading tags on your page if you can.

      What they look like:
HTML heading tags have 4 different sizes and are formatted as you see below.

      Heading Size 1

      Heading Size 2

      Heading Size 3

      Heading Size 4

      Where they belong:

You should have just copied/moved the old site files and used 301 redirects on the old site to point to your new site. A 302 may have been better before a 301.

What’s The Best Form Of Search Engine Optimization? Does any one have any tips on this matter?

    View Comment
    1. Reply

The second metatag is the “Description” which is
usually 41 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one’s goods and services.

And the very last category – “Keywords” are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as “spamdexed entries” which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
“Spamdexing” when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google’s spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
      directory.

      Good luck!

If you hope to get a load of returning visitors, you have to have content that poeple like and tell their friends about, and keep updating it with new things that make people want to keep going to it, and it’s gotta look good.
The better looking, the more people want to be affiliated with it. Also, make friends, and share links. Join web rings, give the links to your friends who are interested, and an interactive element like a message board, or such, will (if handled correctly) keep people coming back.

      1. Link to other pages, and have them link to you.
2 Use relevant META tags for keywords and description

      ……………. Add your URL to google = http://www.google.com/addurl.html + http://www.burgettsys.com/stories/60948
      4. Announce your website in many online forums.
      5. Register your url with google and as many other search engines as possible.
      6. Update your site often to have repeat visistors.
      7. Add your url in your email signature.
      8. Do a search on google, then at the bottom of the page is “Disatisfied with results? Help us improve” link. Just fill out the info. and the spiders will go to your site.
      9. Add your url to your business card and pass them out.

      10. Put a link in your signatues so that every email/post you make will be seen by search engine bots and taken into account. Be sure that it’s properly labeled “+18 Warning” if the link goes to adult material.
