Tony Evans: The Carnal Christian

Sunday 29 June 2008 @ 6:10 am
by Daniel LaLond Jr.

False teaching has always been in the Christian church. In the first century church the doctrine of Jezebel (Rev. 2) crept into the minds of unwary believers. And in contemporary Christian circles spurious doctrine assumes the form of a cadaverous crossbreed dubbed the “carnal Christian.”

One outspoken proponent of this carnal Christian doctrine is Dr. Tony Evans. All of Dr. Evans’ statements quoted in this article are from his booklet The Carnal Christian which is posted on his website. Contrary to Christian history, but in accordance with his alma mater, Dallas Theological Seminary, Dr. Evans harvests this theory from 3 verses in 1 Corinthians chapter 3:

“Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly-mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?” 1 Cor 3:1-3

“Notice that Paul calls them brethren,” wrote Dr. Evans, “which means that he believed they were a part of the family of God…it is possible,” insists the learned Dr. Evans, “to be on your way to heaven but be of no earthly good because you compromise your faith.” Tony Evans is correct dear reader, Paul did call the Corinthians “brethren” and this does indeed mean “that he believed they were a part of the family of God.” From this passage, however, Tony Evans dives headlong into a gurgling cauldron of scripturally unfounded assertions:

- “Simply defined, carnality is a spiritual state in which a born-again Christian knowingly, willingly, intentionally and persistently lives to please and serve self rather than Jesus Christ.”

- “The carnal Christian is a fleshly- minded Christian. Such people live only to please themselves-forget about serving or submitting to Christ.”

Does Paul’s reference to the Christians at Corinth as “brethren” and “carnal” (or worldly) automatically mean that they might remain carnal and unrepentant and yet be welcomed into paradise as Dr. Evans imagines? The answer: not a chance. Remaining in an unrepentant, carnal state wasn’t an alternative for the Corinthians. Paul’s reproof of the “carnal” in 1 Corinthians 3 is spelled out in greater detail soon after in the same book (note that Tony Evans ignores this passage):

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Cor 6:9-10

The inspired writers aren’t the only teachers to snub the “carnal Christian.” No trace of this teaching can be found in any writer or historical church creed that I have examined. From the Ante-Nicene believers such as Polycarp, Clement of Rome or Ireneaus to the Westminster Confession no carnal Christian belief can be established. And from James Arminius to John Calvin no carnal Christian affirmation may be seen. And from Jonathan Edwards to John Wesley or from Charles Finney to George Whitefield no carnal Christian doctrine is included. Dr. Anthony T. (Tony) Evans’ carnal Christian is simply false.

On The Law of Attraction Energy and Love, Peace, and Joy

by Lorelei F

My father passed away a week ago Monday. I was next to him- lying, sitting, standing and holding his hand for the last day and a half of his life. It was a powerful space to be in. It was a space of true love- wordless and unspoken- but poignantly present. My dad could always make me happy. He was always a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. And he did it without the benefit of The Secret, or any of the manifesting tools we have today. That time with him during his last day and a half was both incredibly sad and incredibly beautiful.

How my father attracted the good was that he lived with a happy heart. He made himself and others happy. So as I speak of how to access the Law of Attraction Energy, it seems fitting to look at how we too can live our lives in what I call ‘the happy zone.’

It becomes important then if we want to live in the ‘happy zone’ of attraction for us to determine what makes us happy. Do you enjoy sitting by a babbling brook? Watching the sky turn red at the end of the day? Watching fireflies? Telling a joke with friends?

For me I can access my peaceful self by reading a spiritual book such as “Conversations with God” or Alanon’s “Courage to Change.” I can get it through listening to beautiful music or looking at lovely artwork. I can read affirmation cards, or meditate on the musings of the famous spiritual teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh.

I get into the space of love by lying on the couch with my arms around one of my children. I also get there by cuddling and watching a movie, or conversing with someone I care for about what makes them happy.

When I was a kid my dad and I loved to sing together in the car. We sang at the top of our lungs with the windows up or down. It didn’t matter. And this was how we found our joy together. Joy being all important to accessing The Law of Attraction Energy. So now what is it that brings you joy and happiness? And are you willing to do it, day in and out, no matter what other agendas and jobs you have? Because that truly is the only way to manifest the good in your life. You must feel happy and be happy.

One thing about my dad, He did not watch horror flicks, sad movies, or even the news very frequently. He seemed to know instinctively that negativity was best taken in small doses and I think his example was a good one when it comes to accessing the Law of Attraction Energy.

So as you go through your week and your day, and you want to access the good in life, do what makes you happy. You can even do what makes others happy, and your happiness will often follow along, if you do it with goodwill, and no regrets or resentment. If you can’t do that, then do something just for you. Do what makes you feel good, and you will begin to manifest the good in your life. And it will also honor the memory of my dad, a true light on this earth- whose light can still live on through all of us.

Love, Peace, and Joy and The Law of Attraction Energy

My father passed away a week ago Monday. I was next to him- lying, sitting, standing and holding his hand for the last day and a half of his life. It was a powerful space to be in. It was a space of true love- wordless and unspoken- but poignantly present. My dad could always make me happy. He was always a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. And he did it without the benefit of The Secret, or any of the manifesting tools we have today. That time with him during his last day and a half was both incredibly sad and incredibly beautiful.

My father never spoke the law of attraction, but he lived it. He did what made him and others happy and at peace. He did this day in and day out. And he was happy. So when I speak of how to access the law of attraction energy, I speak about his life, in-absentia, for him and all of us.

So if we want to use the Law of Attraction, we have to determine what makes each of us happy. Perhaps it is communing with nature, lying in the tall grass. Perhaps it is taking a jog or swimming in the ocean. Perhaps it is simply watching the sun set.

As for the space of love, it always happens for me when I am relaxing with people I care for- free of worry or concern for what I ‘have to do.’ I can cuddle and watch a movie, or just talk or listen to what makes others happy.

When I was a kid my dad and I loved to sing together in the car. We sang at the top of our lungs with the windows up or down. It didn’t matter. And this was how we found our joy together. Joy being all important to accessing The Law of Attraction Energy. So now what is it that brings you joy and happiness? The Hippie Era Cordially Explained

Tuesday 20 May 2008 @ 12:08 am
by Chris Channing

Hippies originated in the United States around the 1960’s. The term hippie is derived from hipster, and originally referred to beatniks moving into the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. Hippies created their own communities, used drugs to expand their conscious, took part in the sexual revolution, and primarily listened to psychedelic rock music.

Appearance

Hippies wanted to free themselves from the restrictions of society; by doing so they would choose their own ways and try to find new meanings to life. Hippies dressed differently from societal norms as an expression of independence. The way hippies dressed made it easy for them to recognize one another and their clothing was a symbol of respect for individual rights.

Hippies of both genders commonly wore jeans and had long hair. They generally wore sandals or no shoes at all. The women didn’t work much makeup, if any, and the men had beards. Most female hippies also did not wear bras. Hippies wore tie-dyed shirts and Native American inspired clothing. Hippies were known for making their own clothes, but when they didn’t they were known for buying clothes at second-hand shops or flea markets.

Common Hippie Transportation

Hippies generally traveled in school busses, VW busses, or they would just hitchhike. Their busses were normally repainted with psychedelic graphics. The hippies liked the busses because it allowed them and large groups of their friends to travel together. The Volkswagen symbol on the VW busses were often changed into peace symbols by hippies. The hippies that hitchhiked liked it because it was a good way to meet new people, it was environmentally friendly, and it was economical.

Hippies indulged in drugs and hallucinogens. They felt that by doing drugs it allowed them to open their mind and spirit. Most hippies smoked cannabis, or marijuana. Before long hippies began taking hallucinogens such as LSD, psilocybin, and mescaline. Some hippies even took amphetamines and opiates. Most hippies, including the ones that used them, saw amphetamines and opiates as harmful and addictive so they began to scorn them.

Hippies were generally pacifists who believed solely in peace. Lots of hippies took part in non-violent political demonstrations. Their non-violent political demonstrations included civil rights marches, draft card burning, protests, and anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. Some hippies were involved in peace demonstrations while others were more active in anti-authority and street theater demonstrations. Political movements carried out by hippies include the back to land movement, alternative energy, free press movement, cooperative business enterprises, and organic farming.

Today there are still a large number of hippies. Protests and anti-war parades are still held by hippies and other people. Hippies still attend and hold festivals, some which have been around since the first hippies originated. The Starwood Festival and the Burning Man festival are two major festivals that have been held since the 1960’s and still go on today. Hippie fashion from the 1960’s is still being used today. Music created by and listened to by hippies is still popular in today’s society. The lifestyle of the hippies is still around to this day and is likely to continue for sometime.
