How To Improve Your Finished Basement Design

Tuesday 11 March 2008 @ 9:07 am
by Casey Torren

There can be many uses for your basement. With proper planning, you can remodel it into something worth your time and money. Nowadays, a finished basement design has become a very popular investment. How to improve it is easy, manageable and relatively affordable too. In fact, with a little creativity and knowledge in art or interior design, you can turn your basement into the most beautiful and favorite hangout place in your home.

Be creative. Here are some of the things you can make out of your unattended basement.

- Your home office. Supposing you have a small business run at home and you need an office. The basement can be the perfect place to set this plan up. Assuming that you have a finished basement design already. All you need to do is furnish it. Add office furniture and all other office supplies, equipment, and useful stuff like lamps, book shelf, etc. Don’t forget to install a phone and a fax machine.

- Small gym – A treadmill doesn’t require a huge space. So does any set of weights. You can always put it in a corner in your basement. A good place would be near the window if you like to work out with the cool breeze of fresh air. That way you’ll also have the feel of a semi-outdoor while doing your regular exercise.

- Children’s play pen – There are really no furnishings needed on this one. Although you might need a removable rubber carpet on the floor to go with your finished basement design. Kids can be messy and unpredictable. Accidents can happen. A rubber mat should keep them comfortable in their place. And for extra safety precaution, consider setting up a railing around them.

- Home Entertainment Room – Take advantage of the lack of lighting and convert it into a new facility. Some homes use the dark corners in their basement as a mini theatre. Others would use it as a dark room. Not only is your finished basement design space optimized, it has brought a new experience too.

- Personal Basement Bar – Converting your finished basement design into a bar is a cool idea too. That would take away your problems in where you want to hold mini parties with your friends on weekends. But remember to have proper ventilation or a room temperature balance because it can get warm and sweaty when it’s crowded.

- Your Guest Room – If you have a big family and have used up all the rooms for your kids, why not use the basement as another bedroom. You can have your guests use it. You in-laws perhaps if they come over to visit the kids.

- Your Own Music Studio – Your finished basement design is probably the most well insulated place in your house in terms of acoustics. If you have a teenager who loves to play in a band, you might want to explore this option. A music studio can be cheaper and only needs good sound insulation.

There may still be more but these are just the common things done for a basement. If your basement is spacious, you can accommodate all of the above mentioned. It’s really up to you. A very good finished basement design should be flexible in terms of use. Just make sure it’s still cozy and can make your friends or guests feel welcome. This little den in your home can go a long way.

Getting Tips for Small Bathroom Designs

Tuesday 11 March 2008 @ 7:10 am
by Torrie Cantor

Homeowners need not stress over small bathroom designs. Although the space element may be limited, there are several creative ways to maximize what you have. Here are some top ideas for small bathrooms.

Pick Light Colors

Colors make lasting impressions. Small bathrooms should always avoid dark, heavy colors. These can make your bath seem both assuming and smaller than it is. Light, pastel colors on the other hand with small designs are perfect. These colors create the impression of spaciousness. These are also the colors that can make any room fell fresh, airy and relaxing. Mix and match pastel colors for your floor, walls, cabinets and fixtures.

Use Corner and Overhead Spaces

Make use of unused spaces. The key is to make the most out of these small unused areas. You could for example push your bath tub and toilet to the wall to ensure that no remaining unused space at the back remains. You can also use corners for a hanging sink and a corner shower booth. Overhead spaces can still accommodate cabinets, hamper hooks and racks. As much as possible, keep the floor space free except for your tub, shower stall and toilet.

Choose Smaller Bath Items

Pick out small items and bathroom accessories. Bath fixtures don’t come in single sizes. If you do not have a family of giants, then you can settle for a smaller toilet, bathtub and sink. Do make sure though that you have fixtures that you are comfortable using. Consult the biggest member of your family when picking the smallest possible fixture available.

Use Mirrors

Make use of mirrors. Small bathrooms would look perfect with unadorned mirrors. Extremely small bathrooms might have to do with small round mirrors. Small baths though that aren’t exactly too cramped could use wide mirrors that stretch across walls. It may not be obvious to some but mirrors are design accents that are more than just functional. These reflective surfaces will help make your bathroom seem larger.

Get Lights and Windows

Lights can also help extend the perception of space, just like mirrors. As much as possible, natural light sources should be preferred over artificial ones. Windows over bathtubs or overhead openings bring in not just light but a breath of fresh air.

Choose your night lights well. Opt for generous light fixtures that aren’t just limited to the center of the room. Attach dimmers so you can adjust light options when you are in the mood for subdued lights.

Think Minimal

Don’t keep too many things in your bathroom. As much as possible, stick to only the essential items that a bathroom should have. Move magazine racks, extra cabinets, excess hampers and towel racks from the bathroom.

Small bathroom designs may require your creativity. With a little imagination, you can easily convert a small bathroom into the dream haven you have always wanted.

What to Add in a Contemporary Kitchen Design

Tuesday 11 March 2008 @ 5:05 am
by Torrie Cantor

A contemporary kitchen design is becoming popular these days. These designs usually fit modern needs of the homeowners. Here are some great elements that you should remember to add to a contemporary kitchen.

Sleek Pieces

Fine lines and sleek designs are in these days. Your storage units can come in light or dark finished wood with smooth surfaces. That means no external pulls and handles. Many recent storage unit models now also come in specially coated stainless steel. These easily match the stainless steel refrigerator and appliances that are a staple in contemporary kitchens. For a moderate look, stainless steel can be incorporated with wood and glass elements.

Fewer Items

Although modern kitchen designers may go against certain design elements, they usually share one idea in common though-minimalism. Contemporary designs work best when there is less. This concept is supported by linear geometric designs or patterns. It is a must for you to keep surfaces as clean and as free of objects as possible. Small appliances can be kept in recessed sections or in table top cabinets.

Soft and Bright Colors

Keep your colors very minimal. Just as there should be minimal items, there should also be minimal colors. You can choose a major subdued color accent like white, brown, black or metallic and pair it with one or two bright colors like red and electric blue. You should always remember though that size should be considered when finalizing kitchen colors. Smaller kitchens should always have light colors. Pastel colors will make your kitchen look bigger than it really is.

Lights

Apply modern lighting methods. You can accomplish this by going for lights in recesses or directional hanging lights in metal cones. One important thing that you should never neglect though is that all kitchens, regardless of design should provide clear lighting. This is a rule that cannot be compromised for the sake of design. Kitchen lights protect you from injury during food preparation.

Floor Design and Space

Kitchen floors are important points of consideration. Ceramic tiles and cleverly designed linoleum are cheap options for kitchen floors. If you can spare a few more dollars though, you can go for granite or concrete floors that come with linear designs.

As much as possible, you should keep your floor areas as open and spacious as possible. If you have a small kitchen, you can easily achieve this by removing all barriers that separate the different parts of your house. Your kitchen floor can merge with your living room and dining area. Floor material and lighting can provide the distinction if you feel that there is a need to break areas.

Modern kitchens can come in all shapes and sizes. If you aren’t sure about what you like, the best course of action would be to ask an expert to help you. He may have truly contemporary ideas that you may want to apply on your kitchen.

Miter Saw Stands Make Woodworking Easier

Monday 10 March 2008 @ 9:53 pm
by Guy Morris

As any woodworker will tell you, if you need to cut angles, you need a miter saw. Different kinds of miter saws are good for performing different kinds of functions, and likewise, some miter saws are ideal for beginners while others are designed with the pros in mind. This miter saw guide will help you find the right one for you.

Compound Miter Saws – Straight Angles

Compound miter saws are for making straight cuts and horizontal angles, however, thanks to the tilt in the saw, many users also put them to work cutting bevels into wood. This is the different between a compound miter saw and a basic miter saw. The basic saw has no tilt and so no ability to cut the beveled edges. An added bonus is that they are easy to use, so even a novice woodworker can use on, espccially when using a miter saw stand.

Beyond the basic compound saw is the dual power compound saw. These saws, which are also sometimes called double power bevel saws, cut straight and horizontal angles, much like a compound miter saw. However, these saws are even lighter and easier to tilt so it is easier to cut bevels with more control and accuracy with one of these saws in your workshop.

On the other hand, sliding compound miter saws are not about bevels at all. Instead, these saws are for cutting up large quantities of wood, because they can be easily slid along the surface.

The king of the compound saws is the dual compound sliding saw. Tilting, sliding, beveling, these saws do it all, but they come with a price tag to match. These saws are for generally for professional use.

Radial Arm Saw

These versatile saws are a must have bench saw for any woodworking shop. You can do straight cutting and miter cutting with them, although with somewhat less accuracy, so they are a good saw for when you are getting started.

Panel saws on the other hand are the saw of choice of large scale lumber yard operations. Panel saws can dice up a piece of lumber in no time (hence the name – cutting wood panels), making them ideal for churning out large projects. Panel saws don’t really have a place in home use, however. Panel saws are for lumber related businesses and building contractors, and home users have no need to shell out the big expense on a large panel saw.
