Hallelujah Song by Leonard Cohen

For whatever reason this song came up on a couple internet searches I did, and I decided to look into it further. Upon reading the information at Wikipedia, I was surprised to learn that Leonard Cohen wrote over 80 verses. The verses we’re familiar with are the ones he eventually settled on. The song must have set a record for “modern” songs as it is claimed to have been recorded by over 300 different artists (and climbing).

Although I haven’t listened to all of the recordings on YouTube, here’s a few of my favorites. Enjoy.

And finally, this one brought tears to my eyes because of the context.

What Is The Most Covered Song Of All Time? Now, I’m talking about when artists sing a song by another artist, not talking about when random people post covers of themselves on YouTube. I’m just talking about in the music world. For example, a lot of famous artists have done a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.

What Are Some Good Songs Accompanied Only By A Piano? I love playing John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” but am looking for some other songs where the piano accompaniment is as beautiful as the song itself. With a lot of songs, extra guitars or drums are needed to make it sound as good as the original.

This is likely outside of your personal music experience, but I would have to say that any tune Art Tatum ever played solo sounded amazing and needed no drummer or bassist (although he also made some fine trio recordings with that instrumentation). If you never heard of him, check him out; he was a blind jazz pianist who learned to play off piano rolls- some of which had been produced via four-handed performances! I’ve never heard anyone play the piano better.

Can Atheists, Agnostics, Or Other Non Religious People Like Religious Music? I’m not really religious but I love the Hallelujah song, it makes me feel so happy, and it does something to me I can’t describe. If there is a God that song does God justice.

The reason you can not find them is all are under copyright protection and can’t be legally downloaded without paying a royalty.
Your best bet is to visit a sheet music store.

Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man (2005)

Legendary poet, singer/songwriter and alleged ladies man Leonard Cohen is interviewed in his L.A. home about his extraordinary life and times, interspersed with old footage from his private photo collection and lavish praise plus elaborately performed Cohen cover songs from a motley crew of colleague musicians, amongst whom Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Rufus & Martha Wainwright, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker and U2’s Bono and The Edge. By way of dessert the latter two and their band mates even get to back up the man for a special performance of his own

Interpreting Hallelujah Song? I need help with this old testament homework, We have to interpret a song and talk about the biblical story behind it. I chose Hallelujah but one of the questions is “who’s point of view is the song sung from?” and I am having the hardest time. He had a side note of the biblical passage refers to 2 Samuel 11-12 so I am suppose to use it from the whole David, Bathsheba, Uriah situation. I know the song isn’t directly from the story but who would be the best to say the story is told from

    “Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And it’s not a cry that you hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
    It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah”
*First think I think of is Uriah because he essentially got screwed. Thats all he learned in love. He was killed on the front line which is where they “outdrew him”.

    but then:

    Baby I’ve been here before
I’ve seen this room and I’ve walked this floor (you know)
I used to live alone before I knew you
And I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
and love is not a victory march
    It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Sounds like it could be from Davids point of view. But the first verse says “I heard there was a secret chord, that David played and it pleased the Lord” so that would be weird to be from his point of view since the narrator says David’s name. Now like I said I know there probably isn’t one person and there’s stories like Sampson and Delilah thrown in their but who would be my best bet to say the song’s point of view is written from

“Interpreting” a song, or any piece of art , can be a tricky business. Having written and performed my own and other peoples songs for over 45 years, having studied the humanities, art and literature; and having a bachelors degree in music, I feel some what confident in helping you arrive at a conclusion.
First, I believe that interpretations are not absolute, that they are more like dreams in that the interpretation is is based on the observers reaction to the art. An artist tries to convey the ineffable through the limited means of sight and sound. I believe that in this particular song Leonard Cohen is presenting a personal experience based on biblical and metaphoric images. I do not for one minute believe that he is literally trying to re-tell the biblical story of David, especially when he is also using images from the Samson & Delilah story. Leonard Cohen has used religious metaphors before. (see “the sisters of Mercy”) The use of universal images, ideas and metaphors is one of the basic tools of the craft of song-writing. (ref Bob Dylan’s “My back pages” and the other giants of song-crafting) Consider also that the interpretation of literature has caused more than 1 fight in academic circles.
Here are some Questions that may help you arrive at a satisfactory answer For Yourself.
      1. How does the song make You feel?
2.Try to imagine what kind of relationship dynamics could have influenced Leonard Cohen to write the lyrics that he did.
      3. Go through the song line by line noting the seemingly incongruous Lyric, sometimes he seems to be speaking to a man and other times a woman …etc.
      4. Someone or ones are in anguish, how many viewpoints do you find?
      5. Finally, Find and identify with all the emotions in the song.
I came away from the song feeling as if I had relived a major life experience. How would you sum it up in a short phrase? There are already many different interpretations listed @ sing Check it out.
P.S. The person singing the song is Not a narrator

This question gets asked quite a bit; the song one of my favorites.

Cohen weaves religious/Biblical references throughout his works. Here he’s merging his own love life with that of King David and Bathsheba. Pure, sacred love being lost by the body’s physical needs.

The best explanation I’ve found of that song is “One Haunting Ballad Has Been the Soundtrack to Many Lives Recently. But Why?” by Bryan Appleyard, which can be found at:

This comes from an interview with Leonard Cohen by John McKenna

” In the song Hallelujah, he draws on a wonderfully and subversively passionate passage in the second book of Samuel. It happened towards evening when David had risen from his couch and was strolling on the palace roof that he saw from the roof a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful. David made enquiries about this woman and was told ‘why that is Bethsheba, Allion’s daughter, the wife of Uriah the Hittite.’ Then David sent messengers and had her brought. She came to him and he slept with her. Now she had just purified herself from her courses. She then went home again. The woman conceived and sent word to David – ‘I am with child’.

In the song there’s the baffled king, David, and there’s the baffled singer, Leonard Cohen, in search of the lost chord that certainly pleased the lord and might possibly please the woman. And there’s the original story too, reduced now to the domestic and physical situation that it was and always is. Bethsheba may have broken the throne, but she also tied David to a kitchen chair. Delilah did something similar. There’s more to be learned from the bible than God’s dealing with the human race. There’s also the dealings of women with men. There’s the hard fact that nothing can be reconciled – at least not here.

LC: Finally there’s no conflict between things, finally everything is reconciled but not where we live. This world is full of conflicts and full of things that cannot be reconciled but there are moments when we can transcend the dualistic system and reconcile and embrace the whole mess and that’s what I mean by Hallelujah. That regardless of what the impossibility of the situation is, there is a moment when you open your mouth and you throw open your arms and you embrace the thing and you just say ‘Hallelujah! Blessed is the name.’ And you can’t reconcile it in any other way except in that position of total surrender, total affirmation.

IF you are interested in learning Leonard Cohen songs, pickup a good finger picking book.

Almost all of his stuff is moderately to very difficult to play (I am thinking of “The Partisan”, in particular). Also, you might have to huff some nitrous oxide to sing that low!

good luck, and have fun. But be patient, his picking is pretty fast.

It’s the Cartoon Song by Chris Rice from his “Past the Edges” album. Here’s the lyrics:

I was thinking the other day
      What if cartoons got saved?
      They’d start singing praise
      In a whole new way

Yea, I was thinking the other day
      What if cartoons got saved?
      They’d start singing praise
      In a whole new way

      Fred and Wilma Flintstone sing

      Scooby-do and Shaggy

And the Jetson’s dog named Astro

      Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
      cowabunga-lujah, dude

Then there’s Kermit the Frog here,
      singing hi-ho-la-lujah

And that little bald guy, Elmer Fudd
      hallelujah, uh

Oh that big ol’ Moose and his friend Rocky,

And our favorite bear named Yogi,

And There’s all those little blue guys
      And they’d sing..

Oh, how ’bout Beavis, and that other guy

Now there’s a point to this looney tune
I’m not an animaniac, but there’s a lot of praising to do
And cartoons weren’t made for that,
      It’s our job. Oh, yeah

      So let’s sing hallelujah (hallelujah)
      hallelujah (hallelujah)
      hallelujah (hallelujah)

      Let’s sing hallelujah… (Let’s sing hallelujah)
      hallelujah (hallelujah)
