$2.93!

That’s how much I just paid for gas at the Fred Meyer on Chinden Blvd. And, like my brother-in-law Scott said to me last week during our family Christmas party, “Bet you didn’t think you’d ever get excited about $3 gas“. Well, I am excited, and here’s why.

I’ve been saying all through the economic debacle of the last 4 years, gas dropping into the $2 range (preferably closer to the $2 mark), would be the best thing that could happen to us economically. Not tax cuts, not trillion dollar money injections into the economy, not wishful thinking. No, the best thing would be a drop in the cost of energy. (Which is why I was so “for” Romney in the election – he wanted to create an American energy surplus).

Now, before anyone labels me as an “evil energy pig”, let me say – I do more environmentally than anyone I know. I’ve recycled and reused for years – before it ever became fashionable – and I save hundreds of gallons of gas each year by commuting by bicycle. That’s right – I cycle hundreds of miles each year during favorable weather (I would do it during colder weather as well if it weren’t for the stooooopid EPA, but that’s a story for another post).

My wish for cheap gas is NOT about me and my personal expenses (though it does help), but rather for the economy as a whole. Tourism would increase. Cost of manufacturing and transportation of goods would decrease. Retail costs would decrease. It would be a long lasting shot in the economy’s arm – far more effective than any government stimulus or tax cut (the Bush tax cuts should remain in effect so as to not counteract the lower energy costs).

The odd thing, to me at least, is that this has been overlooked by all of Obama’s “brilliant” economic advisers. Or, perhaps, ignored because it doesn’t fit their specific anti-free-market paradigm.

    Does Anyone Have Any Ideas For Some Good Hor Dourves Recipes? Its for a family Christmas party. It looks as though I need to provide enough for about 50- 75 people. I’d like the hor dourves to be slightly more upscale than just cheese and crackers, but at the same time fairly easy to make! Ideas?

    • “Enchilada Meatballs” – 4 1/2 dozen

      2 cups crumbled corn bread
      1 (10 oz.) can enchilada sauce; divided
      1/2 tsp. salt
      1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
      1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
      1/2 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend

      In a large bowl, combine corn bread, 1/2 of the enchilada sauce and salt. Crumble beef over mixture; mix well and shape into 1″ balls. Place in a greased 15x10x1″ baking pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350* for 18-22 minutes or until meat is no longer pink.
      Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, heat tomato sauce and remaining enchilada sauce. Drain meatballs; place in a serving dish. Top with sauce and sprinkle with cheese. Serve with toothpicks.

      “Festive Crab Cups” – 15 appetizers

      1/3 cup cream cheese; softened
      1/4 cup canned crabmeat; drained, flaked and cartilage removed
      2 tbsp. chopped green onions (scallions)
      1 (2.1 oz.) pkg. frozen miniature phyllo tart shells
      1/3 cup whole-berry cranberry sauce

      In a small bowl, combine cream cheese, crab and onions until blended. Place tart shells on an ungreased baking sheet. Drop 1 tbsp. crab mixture into each shell; top each with 1 tsp. cranberry sauce. Bake at 375* for 12-15 minutes or until heated through.

      “Chicken Poppers” – 25-30 appetizers

      3 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts
      1 cup ground fully cooked ham
      25 to 30 cubes Cheddar cheese (1/2″ cubes)
      1 lb. sliced bacon
      2 to 3 tbsp. olive oil
      1 cup chicken broth
      1/2 tsp. salt
      1/2 tsp. pepper

      Flatten chicken to 1/4″ thickness; cut into 1 1/2″-wide strips. Spread each with 1 tsp. ham. Place a cheese cube on the end of each strip; roll up. Cut each slice of bacon in half widthwise; wrap each around a chicken roll-up. Secure each with a toothpick.
      In a large skillet, cook roll-ups in oil until bacon is crispy, about 10 minutes. Add broth, salt and pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until chicken juices run clear. Serve warm.

      “Apricot Kielbasa Slices” – 4 dozen

      1 lb. fully cooked kielbasa or Polish sausage; cut into 1/3″ slices
      1 (12 oz.) jar apricot preserves
      2 tbsp. lemon juice
      2 tsp. Dijon mustard
      1/4 tsp. ground ginger

      In a large skillet, brown sausage; drain and set aside. Add remaining ingredients to skillet; cook over low heat 2 to 3 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally. Return sausage to skillet; cook 5 to 6 minutes or until heated through. Serve warm with toothpicks.

      “Nuggets with Dill Sauce” – 2 dozen

      1/2 cup all-purpose flour
      2 tsp. sesame seeds
      1/2 tsp. salt
      1 egg; lightly beaten
      1/2 cup water
      Oil for frying
      1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts; cut into 1″ cubes
      DILL SAUCE:
      1/2 cup sour cream
      2 tbsp. dill pickle relish
      1 tsp. dill weed

      In a bowl, combine flour, sesame seeds and salt. Combine egg and water; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened.
      In an electric skillet, heat oil to 375*. Dip chicken into batter; fry a few pieces at a time, for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels; keep warm.
      In small bowl, combine sauce ingredients. Serve with chicken nuggets.

    Why Are Dems Calling To Extend Bush Tax Cuts For 98% Of Us, When They Told Us We Only Got A Pittance? Remember? For years we were told that the Bush tax cuts were for the rich. That the poor and middle class only got a pittance. One particular analogy I remember was the rich were getting a tax break so they could buy Lexus, while all the middle class got was enough to afford the muffler.

    Well Dems, if the Bush Tax Cuts just benefited the rich, why not let them all expire?

    • It must be that liberal “relative truth” thing, where honesty and facts are subject to their creative, flexible “truthfulness.”

      It’s amusing how they now, without shame or integrity, all of a sudden have noticed that Bush’s tax cuts mainly benefitted the non-rich.

    What Is The Bush Tax Cuts, And Why Is It All Over The News? I have been hearing all over the news about the bush tax cuts, what does the the bush tax cuts mean? Also, I think I believe I have been hearing on TV, that President Obama has been promising to keep the bush tax cuts.I may be wrong on that. What is this a big deal over this issue, and what does it mean?

    • You may not remember, but Bush gave us all tax cuts several years back. The media called it tax cuts for the rich, but it was for everyone. Now those rates are expiring at the end of the year and Obama and the democrats want to increase tax rates and continue spending like fools.

      Even with a democrat majority in the house and senate, he can’t get them to agree to let them expire, so they should continue with the rates Bush put in several years ago.

      This is good, it will help the economy. I never thought I’d see Obama do anything to help our country, so I’m happy. The draw back is that they had to compromise and give unemployment benefits for another 13 months. This will add to the deficit and give less incentive to look for jobs. That’s the drawback.

    I Need Easy Pranks To Pull On My Family? My cousin and I are bored at out family Christmas party! We want to pull quick, easy pranks to liven it up. We already did fake dog poop. Any ideas? Super bored here!

    • Chocolate Egg Prank:

      1. Get a raw chicken egg.
      2. Cover it in melted chocolate (You can melt it in the microwave)
      3. Let the chocolate harden in the fridge or just outside.
      4. Decorate it so it can look real (Optional)
      5. Give it to someone! Lmao

      Dryer Powder Prank:

      1. Get some baby powder (Flour would do just fine)
      2. Get someone’s Hair Dryer and stuff the powder in there. Make sure it isn’t messy so it would look like someone didn’t touch it.
      3. Watch the fireworks!

      Plastic wrap prank:

      1. Get clear plastic wrap from your kitchen.
      2. Find an entryway or door that people always walk by.
      3. Take out a piece of plastic wrap that covers at least the width and a few inches on each side of the entryway. If it doesn’t stick then you might need a few pieces of tape to keep it in place. Make sure there are no wrinkles in it and is less noticeable if placed lower. But it hell of funnier when you get them in the face!
      4. Watch someone walk through the doorway.

      Oreo Prank:

      1. Take the cream out of each oreo and fill them with toothpaste.
      2. Have someone eat them.
      3. LOL

      Simple salt prank:

      You can put salt in the sugar bowl, and sugar in the salt shaker.

      Fireworks:

      Light a firecracker next to someone and watch them get scared.
      You can also wake them up with a lot of firecrackers.

    Will The Combo Of The Obamacare Tax On The Middle Class And The Expiration Of Bush Tax Cuts Kill The Economy? Both are massive, massive tax increases.

    The middle class is also expected to pay 75% of all the mandate penalties, according to the CBO. The expiration of the bush tax cuts will also hit the middle class.

    Can the economy handle this much in new taxes?

    • No, and no they’re not. The Obamneycare “tax” as you call it will be levied on approximately 1% of the population or less — according to what has happened with Romneycare (which does the same tax).

      If you guys hate that tax so much, why are you voting for Romney?

    How Do The Bush Tax Cuts And The Alternate Minimum Tax (AMT) Relate? I keep hearing on the news that the Bush Tax Cuts are giving money back to the rich. But then, other news stories say the Alternate Minimum Tax (AMT) is broken, because it applies to too many Americans, making them pay higher taxes. Why doesn’t the AMT negate the Bush Tax Cuts for wealthy Americans?

    • First a quick understanding of how the system works. You pay the alternative minimum tax only to the extent it exceeds your regular tax. With that in mind, it makes sense that if you pay A LOT of regular tax, the “deduction disallowance” factor which puts most people in AMT doesn’t affect those who are already paying a huge amount of regular tax.

      If you consider “wealthy” to be those making over say $400K, the AMT does not generally affect them. At that level of income, most taxpayers have no personal exemptions (an AMT adjustment), they get phased-out on their itemized deductions (also an AMT adjustment) and as a result have a higher regular tax liability. It is because they pay so much REGULAR tax that they owe no AMT. Pick your poison, pay a lot of regular tax or a lot of AMT. (Neither sound particularly exciting to me.)

      But “wealthy” people making between say $100K and $400K are likely candidates for AMT, especially because of the Bush tax cuts. Their regular tax liabilities went down with the Bush tax cuts, but what deductions they are able to take are a larger portion of their tax liabilites verus the “uber-wealthy” folks above. Thus many of these folks, who thought they were getting a tax break with the lower margin rates, ended up giving it back by paying AMT.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      So to answer your question, AMT did negate the tax cuts for moderately wealthy people (although, if you live in certain parts of the country, you would hardly consider $100K -$400K a year wealthy).
      But the super wealthy pay so much regular tax, that they usually don’t fall into the AMT system.
    Why Are Liberals Still Complaining About The Rich When Obama Won, Bush Tax Cuts Expired? Its a done deal! Obama won! The Bush tax cuts expired! Why aren’t the liberals satisfied yet? What more do they want from them? They’re life? What a bunch of whining babies! Get a job and make your own dang money liberal weirdos!
    WoW! Someone says they didn’t expire! HA HA HA HA ! Shouldn’t people who are clueless to reality just go watch Spongebob ?
    • When did the Bush tax cuts expire ???????????????????????????? They are due to expire at the end of this year
    Do You Think The Reason The Dems Will Not Hold A Vote On The Bush Tax Cuts Is Because They Are Playing Politic? Because they are playing politics? They announced that they do not have the votes to extend the Bush tax cuts to all but the wealthy, as there are several dems who want to extend them to all. But if they hold the voting up until after the November elections, then the dems can blame it on the Republicans . This is my thought, but I would like to hear what you think.
    • I think Dems are playing the games of I’ll be the Hero and Republicans can be the ones we Demonize for not allowing all of the Tax cuts to remain and only the part top % of wage earners to receive it. Then come around Nov. they will say WE Democrats wanted to extend ALL tax cuts,especially for the middle wage earners and the POOR, but the Republicans wanted it only for their Rich friends in the Oil Companies to receive them. I guess we know that who is not being truthful of all the facts here don’t we fellow bloggers, it is just a matter of looking into the mirror to see who it really is.
      So I guess it just comes down to who is gullible enough to believe that one class of people want to hurt two classes and not the Rich? That makes no logical sense what so ever. It is like saying Obama does not want Socialism when it is clear he is doing everything possible to make this happen. You folks are the ones who don’t really care, and want it so it doesn’t concern you of it’s seeing the light of day. You are telling us you want to be wards of the state because you think BIG DADDY will keep his promise to take care of you.
      UGO THAT you are right about deficit spending and funding Wars without proper recourse for gaining revenue, but then to want to add Trillions of dollars of extra spending to promote Pork that did nothing to “Bail Out anyone.” I would say with the exception of extending unemployment Benefits that I agree were necessary to do for the sake of people being able to eat. But funding a Health Care system that will cost 1.2 Trillion dollars to finance, and then wants to raise taxes on it’s citizens that can’t afford this burden and expects them to pay for another. You sound like too intelligent of a man to argue for accepting this premise of pure foolishness………When it is all said and done folks, this is not responsible way to spend OUR money, and I do not agree how Bush caved into spending money without a proper way of replenishing what was taken. Two wrongs do not make what Obama is doing right……………..
    When Do The Bush Tax Cuts Expire? In other words…when are our taxes going up? for those of you who think these are just “rich” taxes, you will be surprised. The lower income is the ones that end up paying so much more.
    I know…Obama’s $13.00 a week tax cuts are a total joke. At least when bush cut taxes I saw an extra $300 a month! Now THAT is a car payment..and a real tax cut!
    • Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy expire in 2011.
    When Will Obama Cancel Bush’s Tax Cuts That Let The Wealthy Skate And Led To 40% Of Americans…? …PAYING NO TAXES AT ALL!
    This was a disaster in the making from day one!
    When will the nightmare of irresponsible, unsupported tax cuts be over?
    It’s OUR country – everybody has to pay SOME share.
    I have no problem with the wealthy paying more taxes on their top salaries – and no problem with the working class and poor paying their fair share too.
    Our economy and debt is completely out of control.
    It’s pay now, or pay later in some far worse way.
    The marriage penalty was not part of Bush’s large tax cut. Obama will not change that I guarantee you.
    But people getting huge inheritences they didn’t do any work for will hopefully have to pay some taxes again – thankfully.
    • The Bush tax cuts are set to expire on Jan. 1, 2011 and Congress is not likely to renew them. Although I join you in wishing he would stop them now for the top 5% right now.
      Did you know that if you’re judging by tax rates, Reagan and Eisenhower were more socialist than Obama? Obama wants to move the current 35% up to 39%, same place it was under Bill Clinton. That 39% is still less than the 50% under Reagan and the 91% under Eisenhower. FDR had it at 94% at one point and the rich still stayed rich. Remember, much of the rich's wealth is not taxable income, its dividends.
      Today, the concentration of privately held wealth at the top is at its highest peak since 1929, the year the financial markets crashed and gave rise to the Great Depression of the 1930s. At that time, 25% of the population was out of work. Despite our economy being mired in the deepest recession since the 1930s, people in the top 1% continue to own as much wealth as those in the bottom 90%.
      Reagan gave the rich a 42% tax cut and doubled payroll taxes on the working and middle classes. What Reagn's tax cut for the rich did was to disengage the working and middle classes from the economy, coupled with the PATco strike we saw an erosion of Labor rights as tax breaks for outsourcing started.
      First they come for your jobs (Reagan) then they come for your homes (Bush).
    Did George Bush’s Tax Cuts, Create A Bubble, Which Caused The Recession? Would consumer spending have been as irresponsible as it was during the Bush administration, and after 9/11 when Bush told everyone to go shopping, if he hadn’t given us tax cuts? We all know the boom during the Bush administration was based on nothing more people spending above their means. What I’m asking is: did tax cuts contribute to this boom, and the inevitable bust?
    • The average American benefited very little from Bush’s tax cuts. The true beneficiaries were the rich who didn’t need the tax cuts in the first place. The recession was caused primarily by repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act under Clinton. Since 1933 that act had separated commercial banks from investment banks. After the repeal, the two kinds of banks merged, making enormous sums of money available for investing. The merged banks then started a gigantic Ponzi scheme with the people’s money. High-risk mortgages were combined in packages with low-risk mortgages, and the packages were then given low-risk ratings by the same crooked securities rating companies that were employed by the very banks that were involved in the Ponzi scheme. The banks then sold the fraudulently-rated securities on the open market. In the meantime, the Federal Reserve Bank under Allan Greenspan refused to regulate the dishonest banks. In fact, Greenspan encouraged the development of the housing bubble by keeping interest rates low and telling everybody to go out and buy a house. Millions of people bought houses at the low interest rates that had a catch–the low rates were only temporary. When interest rates increased again, millions of Americans could no longer afford to meet their monthly mortgage payments. That’s when the bubble burst and the recession started. Tax cuts had relatively little to do with all this. Who’s to blame? Republicans. All but a few Democrats. Certainly Presidents Clinton and Bush. And most of all, the American people who elect and re-elect the same kind of crooks to high office, time and time again.
    Who Benefited From The Bush Tax Cuts? http://ibdeditorials.com/AnotherLookPopUp.aspx?id=288403506725501
    Apparently everyone. Can you imagine what your taxes will be under a Hillary or Obama regime with all their spending plans?
    Amazing Diane, I guess facts have no effect on some people.
    • Nobody.
      Bush cut taxes but increased spending because he needed money for the war. The US deficit continued to grow at an astronomical rate under the Bush Administration. The Dollar has never been weaker because of it.
