To begin the SEO process, you first must understand where your product or service fits into the grand scheme of the Internet. This is a two-phase process. First, you should think narrowly and specifically. What is your pinpoint niche and who are the people you most want to reach. This will be the focus of your SEO efforts. Next, think big. Think of the obscure ways your business my relate to other areas, which at first glance might not be obvious. This is how you broaden your visitor base and create page views. Now you’re ready to develop a plan to reach these people.

Facebook

Proper SEO starts by understanding how people search online for things relating to what you offer. The millions of people online will use a variety of words and phrases to search for the same thing. In SEO, we call these keywords and keyword phrases. To cover the widest area, you must identify as many of these as you can. Once you’ve identified the keywords, the next step is to incorporate them into your site’s content.

Interested Parties

Keywords are SEOessential, but they should be used naturally. In the old days, web developers would create entire pages of nothing but keywords. The search engines improved and now that not only no longer works, it can cause your website to be seen as spam and penalized. Avoid this!

Media Queen

Backlinks are links to your site located on other indexed websites. But, not all websites are created equal. The goal is to acquire backlinks from websites that are well respected by the search engines. For example, it’s better to have a single backlink from a respected university page than to have twenty backlinks from a group of random Blogger pages. Creating backlinks takes time and effort, but there are tricks the experts use to speed up the process and make it more effective.

Profound Aspects

Content is the king of the web when it comes to SEO. By creating useful content and spreading it around the web via article directories and other venues, you can increase your site’s exposure as well as its level of respect. What you don’t want to do is saturate the web with fluff. Search engines see through this and will penalize you for it. Quality articles on quality sites is the goal.

Search Engines

An area that people often overlook is the use of keywords in tags and page titles. These are often the first things the search engines see and will increase page visibility. Make sure to tag all photos on your site with relevant keywords so the search engine gets an idea of what the photo is. Keywords in titles shoud be relevant to the page’s content.

Showcases

SEO is not a simple process, but after you understand the basics you can develop a good SEO strategy and begin to see results. Keep in mind that this is an ongoing process and will take time to reach it maximum effectiveness. Good luck.

Is Search Engine Optimization Bible The Best Book On SEO? I heard from one of you that “search engine optimization bible” by Jerri L. Ledford was the best book on mastering seo is this true or is there another book that is the best?

    • Hi dear,

There is no best book on internet for mastering SEO. Because SEO is an ongoing process. Strategies change day by day.

Best way of learning SEO is research and googling. Ask questions and discover answers from forums like seochat.com.

seomoz.com is also a good place for this purpose.

What Online Search Engines Are Used Most In Italy? We need to find out which search engines are used most in Italy. We think that google is the top one used worldwide, so what are the second and third most popular used ones there?

    • Google is ranked #1 in Italy, BY LARGE, then Virgilio (tied to Alice, the main internet provider in Italy) Arianna (Libero, the second largest provider) then Yahoo and MSN (all other, less than 1%).
      Here statistics for 2008: http://www.gplorusso.it/motori-di-ricerca.htm
Please note that most search engine are acutally based on Google, like Arianna (Libero) that use it for searching on the web, but provide different sources for other kind of databases.

Why Do All Search Engines Give You The Same Exact Links In The Same Exact Order? What’s the use in having different search engines if they all give you the same lame results?
9 out of 10 times what I am searching and the results they give me are way off.

Does anyone know of a search engine that actually gives you results to what you’re actually looking for and not just a guess from one or two words you type in the search bar?

What Happened To My Search Engines? I did a system restore and now all my search engines are gone. How do I get them back and where did they go?

    • Search engines are just websites to search things such as google.com, bing.com, yahoo.com, ask.com, etc. Just go to your Internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, etc. and just type in the search engine website.

Here are a list of search engines you can try:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_search_engines
      or
      http://www.philb.com/webse.htm

Google is the most popular and reliable search engine, so I recommend that and probably a million other people would agree with me too.

How Do Search Engine Work? Well i tried searching same keywords at different search engine sites
    why always not exactly same?
why for example in this website

i searched this paragraph in google and yahoo…
Before you jump into a car, you need to know where you???re going. In SEO, you need to know what keywords you are going to optimize for before you start optimizing. Spending a few hours researching keywords can make all the difference in the world.
…but the site http://www.discuss-bb.org doesn’t appear at the first page of either site

    • Search engines only do just index what they got from spiders.the spiders or robots are objects that gather information from various websites so it might be depend on engine to engine how they gather information(to process) then they process that information and convert to data(processed information)
and then store that data in their servers as indexes so whenever the used search a keyword from their site that keywords point out to index that stored on the server and return the data to user. so in that context data is the links or image or video URLS.

Directory Style Search Engine? What is Directory style search engine

    • Hi Caz…

There are two main types of search engine… Directory based and Key Word driven.

Directory search engines are the likes of http://www.Yell.com, http://www.BT.com/thephonebook, http://www.thomsonlocal.com, along with home pages of most broadband service providers like Tiscali etc. This is where people can search for a business or service in a certain area; eg: Who, What, Where search like ‘Builders’ in ‘Birmingham’ They are ‘powered’ by the databases of BT and Thomson Local.

Key word searches bring results of more specific ‘phrase’ enquiries. The results of a ‘key word’ search are list or database of Websites who’s content and preferred keywords have been checked by the engine’s ‘spiders’ and stored on the database, and shown only if the website content has relevence to the search word or phrase you have entered. Google, Yahoo etc are examples.

You can normally tell if it is a Directory style search as there will normally have two or three boxes to put the info, eg Business Name (Who); Business Type (What); Town or Postcode (Where). Key word search generally only have one box to enter your question or keywords.

Hope that is not too ‘techie’ and answers your question for you.

    • Have to pay dont you

      this might help
If you are like most people, you will spend countless hours trying to BuildTraffic to your website. Did you know that over 80% of website traffic is the result of search engines? If you want to increase the number of visitors to your website it is crucial that you have a top search engine position. As you may already know, getting a good search engine ranking is next to impossible without optimization. Just submitting your website to the search engines will not get you a top search engine ranking. You also need to properly optimize your website in order to increase your search engine ranking. Once you have achieved a good search engine position only then will you start to see thousands of people visiting your website each and every day

came to edit also found this on here

You should have a short and long term marketing goal for your website.
Short term must be immediate traffic and long term must focus on search engine optimization.

Immediate traffic is achieved by activity in forums and writing articles about your services/products. Your articles must obviously be of high quality and optimized with the necessary keywords which will attract readers. If your articles are very good then other webmasters may link to them creating extra traffic and backlinks to your website. Going back to the forums, you should be active in forums which are related to your website. Make sure to insert links to your site wherever possible without making it look spammy. These links also create backlinks to your website which again help your PR.

Successful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will provide high unpaid search engine rankings which will provide you with targeted traffic. SEO holds a lot of value on targeted backlinks and original quality content. This takes time and patience but you will be rewarded if you update your site regularly with quality information.

About Search Engines? Just curious as what if you found something
about yourself on the search engines that
wasn’t correct? For example, what if you
wrote something nice in just one sentence and
then you see you have something someone
else wrote that wasn’t good with yours?
Can they control what is on these search
    engines? Thanks Alot.
I was told by a friend that a computer
actually does it but you can ask the
people in charge of the search engine
to remove it and they usually do.
I guess you should watch what other
people write ahead of you before
you post anything. I wanted other
    opinions too. Thanks.

    • A search engine uses ‘tags’ (the words you put in when you are making the search) and pulls every entry they are ‘connected to’ that has those tags in them. I’ve done a search on my name and get many different things on many different people. My husband is a web developer, and when he makes a website, he’ll ‘tag’ it so that it comes up in the top five of many different engines. If you did a search and got something ‘negative’ when the only words you used were your first and last name, you could be the victim of ‘cyber-bullying’ or it could simply be just a reference to someone with the same name as you. Read it carefully, and if you feel that the negative reference is to you and is wrong, then call the state agency that takes care of hacking charges, and report it.

A program that searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found. Although search engine is really a general class of programs, the term is often used to specifically describe systems like Google, Alta Vista and Excite that enable users to search for documents on the World Wide Web and USENET newsgroups.

Typically, a search engine works by sending out a spider to fetch as many documents as possible. Another program, called an indexer, then reads these documents and creates an index based on the words contained in each document. Each search engine uses a proprietary algorithm to create its indices such that, ideally, only meaningful results are returned for each query.
      search engines are ::
      1. A software program that searches a database and gathers and reports information that contains or is related to specified terms.
      2. A website whose primary function is providing a search engine for gathering and reporting information available on the Internet or a portion of the Internet.

A subject directory is a service that offers a collection of links to Internet resources submitted by site creators or evaluators and organized into subject categories. Directory services use selection criteria for choosing links to include, though the selectivity varies among services. Most directories are searchable.

Directories are useful when you are doing topic-based research. If you have a research project, or need to explore an idea, event, subject area, proposition, phenomenon, etc., directories are a good place to begin. Visit search engines for very targeted or obscure topics, multi-concept queries and searches for specific people, sites, etc. Directories are the better place to begin your research on topics.
      General Tips

      1. There are two basic types of directories: academic and professional directories often created and maintained by subject experts to support the needs of researchers, and directories contained on commercial portals that cater to the general public and are competing for traffic.
      2. Academic and professional directories are created by librarians or subject experts and tend to be associated with libraries and academic institutions. These collections are created in order to enhance the research process and help users find high quality sites of interest. A careful selection process is applied, and links to the selected resources are usually annotated. These collections are often created to serve an institution’s constituency but may be useful to any researcher. As a rule, these sites do not generate income or carry advertising. INFOMINE, from the University of California, is an example of an academic directory.
      3. Commercial portals are created to generate income and serve the general public. These services contain directories that link to a wide range of topics and often emphasize entertainment, commerce, hobbies, sports, travel and other interests not necessarily covered by academic directories. These sites seek to draw traffic in order to support advertising. As a part of this goal, the directory is offered in conjunction with a number of additional customer services. LookSmart is an example of a commercial portal.
      4. Subject directories differ significantly in selectivity. Consider the policies of any directory that you visit.
      5. One challenge to the above is the fact that not all directory services are willing to disclose either their policies or the names and qualifications of site reviewers.
      6. The lines between directories, search engines and the deep Web are blurring. The deep Web is often represented by searchable news, phone books, dictionaries, maps, stock quotes, items in retail stores, multimedia files, etc. Directories are also present at some search engine sites, and sometimes their contents are searched along with content from the general Web. For example, AltaVista offers the LookSmart directory.

Directory results are sometimes placed before search engine results in order to steer users to the directory’s content. This can be a useful way of getting at substantive content relating to your query.
      7. Most subject directories are searchable. For more information, see General Search Strategies later in this tutorial.

Two subject directories useful for initial exploration are Yahoo and BUBL LINK. These services illustrate vastly different policies for the selection and evaluation of sites to include in their collections.

      * Yahoo does not reliably evaluate content, but only categorizes sites submitted to the service. Yahoo! is the most famous example of a commercial portal, but it is not an appropriate research tool. To see a selected list of these types of sites, follow this link.
      * BUBL LINK is a significant, professionally-maintained directory that is a UK funded project hosted by the University of Strathclyde Library in Glasgow, Scotland. Its many years of experience are apparent in the breadth of its listings, useful indexing, variety of access points and cogent, well-written annotations

How To Ping For Search Engines? I make a sitemap for my new site, and I want to ping for major search engines, is there an easy way?

    • I think ping for search engines is useful. sitemap can help search engine crawl complete and quickly, and ping just like a notifier, which can tell search engines, there is a update waiting for crawl. that is to say, without ping, you are waiting for search engine to crawl, and ping, you will let search engine to crawl.

and if you want to ping, you can use the tool i use, it called SitemapX, yes, as the name shows, it not just for ping, but for sitemap making, it is a free tool, you can try it.

Sumbit Your Site To A Search Engine!? How to sumbit my site/ store to a search engine? How Often should i sumbit it? And about how long does it take to be on the search engine!? Please serious answers please!!

    • Different search engines have functionalities that would allow users to submit sites for free. How it usually works is, you would need to browse to the category in which you want your site to appear. There will be a submission link somewhere on that page to let you submit your site. It usually takes a week or two for your site to appear on the search engine though. Once it is submitted, you don’t have to submit again. However, what most search engines do is, they would cache your web page. If you don’t want the search engine to cache your page, you would need to do something on your end to not allow that to happen.

Search Engines? Do you know where I can find a professional search engine that is credible?

    • In the search engine list below. you can find the major search engines of the web.
Why are these considered to be “major” search engines? Because they are either well-known or well-used.

For webmasters, the major search engines are the most important places to be listed, because they can potentially generate so much traffic.

For searchers, well-known, commercially-backed search engines generally mean more dependable results. These search engines are more likely to be well-maintained and upgraded when necessary, to keep pace with the growing web.
